CBC Newfoundland & Labrador is looking for a Producer assigned to Current Affairs in Corner Brook. This producer will be responsible for gathering and producing content for Newfoundland Morning, a daily 3 hour morning show. You work with the show producer based in Gander and lead a small team of journalists in a multi-platform news environment.

As an experienced Producer you will participate in developing, producing and presenting editorial content, creative storytelling and finding great guests for the show. You will have a keen understanding of storytelling with audio and the evolving expectations of the audience. Reporting to the Senior Producer of Programming, you are solid editorially with clear news instincts and appetite for daily journalism. You have a sophisticated understanding of storytelling for all formats and can help the team deliver a compelling, informative show that reflects the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

You are a producer who’s focused on the audience and what they need. You know how to engage new, more diverse and younger audiences familiar with digital and social media conventions and story-telling.

You will work closely with the assignment desk to ensure content is up to date and informed on relevant, local stories. You will also work closely with other producers to ensure sharing of story ideas and content.

Key Tasks
  • Research, write and produce original story ideas for current affairs, text, social with potential for video platforms that will engage and inform the audience, deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices.
  • Regularly present stories on-air, providing analysis and context to enhance the audience’s understanding of issues.
  • Respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold.
  • Deliver exclusive and enterprise material on a regular basis.
  • Distill large amounts of complex information under tight time constraints.
  • Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of sources and contacts.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and break stories, plan features and coordinate long-term coverage.
  • Communicate and work in conjunction with the show producer.
  • Deal with certain facility issues. (ie. contact contractors when issues arise)
As a Current Affairs Producer, you will bring the following skills and experience to the CBC:
  • Minimum three years recent experience in a daily news environment
  • Strong journalistic skills.
  • Strong audio editing and storytelling experience
  • Strong reporting, presentation and broadcast writing skills.
  • Ability to adapt to ongoing technical demands such as desktop editing, assisting with daily lineup, social media posts and knowledge of field gathering tools and applications.
  • Strong understanding of demonstrative live storytelling techniques.
  • Strong presentation and reporting skills, with the ability to go live from remotes.
  • Ability to incorporate breaking news into a live broadcast.
  • Strong vetting ability.
  • Ability to balance the big picture creative thinking with the “daily grind” of producing a daily current affairs (radio) program. This is a very hands-on position.
  • Ability to assign, manage and motivate staff, coordinate with other departments in a productive manner, and mediate disputes as they arise.
  • High-level knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Deep knowledge of and connection to the equity-seeking communities across mainland Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Excellent general knowledge about Newfoundland and Labrador provincial and civic politics, demographics, geography, and current issues.
  • Experience and proven ability to tell news stories in compelling and innovative ways.
  • Ability to manage large volumes of fast-moving information.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong team player.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada’s insurance company.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts including early starts, late finishes and weekends
