What the role is all about:

Reporting directly to the Manager, Arena Services and Team Lead, Skate & Hockey School, the primary role of the Power Skating Instructor is to provide a positive, memorable and safe experience for all participants while leading them through both their on-ice activities. Instructors will be responsible for assisting Lead Instructors in their on-ice lesson plans and presentation, leading on-ice activities as well as providing group supervision, behavioural management, and instruction in fundamental movement and sport skill activities for children.

The ideal candidate will possess patience, an energetic personality, a commitment to safety, a passion for sport and strong skills in the areas of leadership, teamwork, communication, time management, on-ice technical skills, and problem solving.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership, supervision and instruction to participants both on and off the ice focusing on fundamental skill development
• Provide group supervision and behavioural management to ensure the safety of participants during all aspects of their program
• Carry out non-teaching duties that relate to the programs: first day check-in, ice set-up, ice take-down, and customer assistance
• Work as part of a team with other Skate & Hockey School staff including managers, program leads, team leads, instructors, volunteers, arena staff and other WinSport team members
• Effectively communicate with participants and parents
• Provide daily leadership and direction to volunteers
• Represent yourself and WinSport in the best way possible while upholding the organization’s vision, mission and values
• Attend scheduled training sessions to ensure current, and effective product delivery
• Carry out non-teaching duties that relate to program operations: first day check-in, activity set-up, activity take-down, game-day logistics, customer assistance and administrative duties
• Demonstrate a safe work practice at all times by adhering to all WinSport safety policy and procedures and ensuring one’s own safety is preserved along with the safety of co-workers, direct reports and WinSport guests
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Current Standard First Aid/CPR Certification is mandatory
• NCCP Hockey Instructional Stream Skating Level 1 is considered an asset
• Current NCCP CanPowerSkate certification is considered an asset
• Other NCCP Certifications with Hockey Canada and Skate Canada are considered an asset
• Multisport NCCP Certifications are considered an asset
• Completed or working towards the completion of a post-secondary education in Education, Physical Education, Kinesiology, Sport Administration or related program is considered an asset
• A passion for sport, in particular ice sports
• Experience teaching or coaching power skating
• Experience working with youth
