PEER SUPPORT WORKER, RECOVERY COLLEGE

ONE (1) TEMPORARY PART-TIME POSITION (18 HOURS PER WEEK)

CONTRACT UNTIL APPROXIMATELY JUNE 30, 2022
LOCATION: WINDSOR OFFICE
Recovery Colleges are offered at multiple CMHAs across Canada. It is built upon the belief that people with lived experience have expert knowledge about recovery and that peer support is an essential ingredient to wellness. All Recovery College courses are co-developed and co-facilitated by people with lived experience. Courses are open to anyone who wishes to improve their wellness and are offered free of charge. Each course has stated learning objectives and the effectiveness and impact of our courses are being continually evaluated.

Reporting to the Manager, Community Engagement, the Peer Support Worker provides in-person and virtual facilitation of Recovery College courses which are open to individuals experiencing a mental health concern, mental illness and/or addiction, as well as their caregivers.

This position will work with a Recovery Facilitator and together they will both demonstrate the competencies of Recovery College, which include hope, collaboration, personal growth, recovery planning, communication, creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, managing information, capacity building and inclusivity. Peer Facilitators use recovery stories to inspire hope in others and share their practical, first-hand knowledge of strategies for promoting mental health and available mental health resources.

Evening shifts will be expected as part of the regular schedule after completing orientation and initial training.

Responsibilities and Duties:

· Role Models:

o Peers offer understanding, emotional support, and inspire hope and the possibility of recovery.

o Sharing lived experiences can strengthen a student’s sense of hope and build their sense of hope and understanding of recovery.

o Peers build trusting relationships based on shared lived experience; role-modelling individual recovery and living well with mental health problems; and engaging service users with mental health services and the community.

o Peers are able to make a meaningful connection with others by building a relationship through talking and listening; supporting self-care and wellbeing, and challenging stigma.

· Provide group recovery and skills training sessions for people living with mental health and/or substance use in the Recovery College.

· Research, tailor and create core curriculum content and weekly themes ensuring they meet target population and community needs

· Promote the recovery philosophy and empower people with skills to live interdependently as part of a supportive engaged community.

· Remain current with new policies, services, resources and legislation applicable to the mental health/addiction community and recovery movement.

· Assist with the development of engagement strategies with hard to reach and underserved groups including but not limited to; youth, seniors, indigenous and ethno-cultural groups.

· Compile appropriate and meaningful community resources for group participants.

· Support evaluation and outcomes data related to programs delivered.

· Promote the principles of diversity and equity in all work-related duties, wherever applicable.

· Work collaboratively with the Recovery College team to develop new training materials and sessions.

· Provide information on the Recovery College, describe courses, assist with the development of an Individual Learning Plan and answer questions.

· Contribute to the leadership or advisory of the College through advisory group membership, course and curriculum development and evaluation.

· Complete administrative duties and required documentation.

· Facilitate/co-facilitate as peer instructors and fill the role of peer tutor/ classroom assistant

Education and Skills:

  • High School Diploma is required.
  • Given the nature of this position, it is a requirement that the individual have personal lived experience with mental illness and/or addictions and is willing to self-disclose.
  • Successful completion of Recovery College training is required upon hire.
  • Familiarity with the guiding principles of peer support as detailed by Peer Support Canada, a deep commitment to understanding the recovery model.
  • Training and/or experience in Peer Support and/or Recovery Colleges is considered an asset.
  • Experience working or volunteering within addiction and/or mental health organizations is an asset.
  • Demonstrated understanding of mental health; mental illness and recovery; information and referral services; and crisis intervention.
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is considered an asset.

· Knowledge of and ability to access and utilize mental health resources and network.

  • Experience with group presentation and development is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in computer programs include Microsoft Office: PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and part of an interdisciplinary team

· Bilingualism in both official languages at the advanced level is considered an asset.

· Valid Ontario Driver’s License and own means of transportation are required.

· Full vaccination status is required in accordance with the agency’s COVID-19 Vaccination policy. Providing proof of full vaccination status will be a condition of employment.

Hours of Work:

Eighteen (18) hour work week. The agency’s regular hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM. Evening shifts will be expected as part of the regular schedule until at least 7:00PM to accommodate client and service needs.

Flexible hours are required to accommodate clients and meet service needs. Shift premiums will be paid in accordance with Article 17.09.

Salary range: Grade 3, $20.44 - $24.87 per hour (Initial JJE Rating)
