Family Service Toronto (FST) helps people face a wide variety of life challenges. For over
100 years, we have worked with individuals and families destabilized by precarious mental
health and/or socioeconomic circumstances to achieve greater resilience and stability in
more just and supportive communities. We achieve this through our direct service work of
intervention and prevention which includes counselling, peer support and education;
knowledge building; and system-level work, including social action, advocacy, community
building and working with partners to strengthen the sector.

Healthy Families Healthy Communities (HFHC) is a community engagement program for
newcomer women, seniors, and youth. The program activities support the Afghan, Iranian,
Nigerian, Latino-Hispanic, Somali, and Arabic-speaking communities. Peer support groups,
educational workshops, and community events are delivered to seniors, women, and youth
from these communities in their first language and facilitated by staff with lived experiences.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide participants with appropriate information and referrals
  • Participate in training on how to deliver/facilitate peer support groups
  • Assist with outreach to Afghan community to raise awareness of the Healthy Families,
Healthy Communities program and to organize and recruit participants
  • Facilitate peer support groups and assist with community-based workshops for the Afghan

group

  • Assist with research activities, including on-line research, focus groups and/or telephone
interviews
  • Maintain up-to-date notes, records, statistics and other data, as required
  • Assist with the regular and timely recording and input of data and statistics into the
database system, as required based on FST’s policies and procedures
  • Participate in debriefing, supervisory and team meetings
  • Maintain confidentiality of participants’ data and information at all times
  • Participate in training and educational opportunities, as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Post-secondary education or equivalent combination of education and experience. Foreign
credentials and relevant experience will be considered
  • One to two years of experience working or volunteering with community groups
  • Knowledge of services and resources for newcomers to Canada
  • Knowledge and ability to use social networking platforms, i.e. Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram, Whatsapp
  • Ability to speak and understand the official Afghan languages (Dari, Pashto)
  • Strong listening, written and verbal English communication skills
  • Some knowledge and understanding of family violence and gender-based violence issues
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with Afghan participants
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, accessibility, inclusion and cultural
competency
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Ability to work with flexible schedules, including some evenings and occasional weekends
and able to work remotely, if needed
  • Criminal reference check with Vulnerable Sector Search
