The Population and Public Health (PPH) Division focuses on improving people’s overall health and well-being by promoting health; preventing disease, disability, and injury; protecting people from harm; and ensuring particular focus on key groups including Indigenous peoples, women and children. The intent of these actions is to promote a healthier population and reduce current and future demands on the health care system.

PPH business areas fulfill their work through stewardship, including planning, directing and evaluating programs, policies, and legislation; providing leadership and expert advice based on evidence and best practices; and by building relationships with key partners and stakeholders.

The Healthy Living and Health Promotion Branch works to reduce the incidence of preventable chronic disease and injury by addressing risk factors and supporting health-promoting environments that enable British Columbians to make healthy lifestyle choices. The branch is responsible for population health and wellness strategies related to: healthy eating and food security, physical activity, healthy weights, injury prevention, healthy built environments, aging well, and reduced harms associated with tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis use, as well as gambling. As a key element of an overall strategy to improve population health, the branch supports clinical prevention across the life course. The branch also supports population health promotion strategies in settings, including schools, local communities and in the workplace. To support this work, the branch also incorporates social marketing, and provides governance and procurement oversight over contracts and/or grants with non-government organizations and others.

This position is responsible for providing leadership, expert advice, best practices, policy development, performance measurement and monitoring related to health promotion programs in community and school-linked settings. This involves enhancing the capacity of health authorities, local government and agencies within the public health, education and other systems to work together to promote and maintain health behaviours throughout the lifespan. It also includes stimulating inter-sectoral action across all levels of government, reporting against health goals and targets, identifying common risk factor trends and activities and aligning efforts at all levels in a manner that is respectful of federal, provincial, local and sectoral mandates. The position develops strategic approaches to building capacity and infrastructure for the longer term through the provision of technical expertise, standards, research and surveillance and monitoring of all aspects of health promotion and specific risk identification.
