Overview:
The Out-of-Province (OOP) Adjuster is responsible for the investigation, assessment, negotiation and settlement of all types of first and third party automobile claims occurring outside of Manitoba. These claims involve light vehicle damage and often include subrogation against third parties and insurers to recover payment for related claims costs.
Responsibilities:
  • With minimal guidance investigates all out-of-province physical damage claims for coverage, liability and quantum.
  • Communicates with relevant parties including, but not limited to, claimants, witnesses, passengers, on-site emergency aid, police, hospital, tow truck drivers, property owners, provincial and state authorities.
  • Makes timely subrogation demands of out-of-province third parties and insurance companies, ensuring appropriate follow up to preserve legal timelines and proscription dates.
  • Resolves liability and quantum with outside agencies, claimants, third parties, third party insurers and third party lawyers.
  • Ensures negotiated settlements are reasonable and supportable up to authority limits as authorized by the Supervisor, Out-of-Province Claims and Management.
  • Utilizes a solid understanding of policy wordings, legislation and jurisdictional requirements that may impact a claim.
  • Reviews jurisdictional statute law to confirm potential legal liability exposure.
  • Handles downtime/loss of use claims, including claims related to a diverse group of vehicles.
  • Investigates, quantifies and negotiates out-of-province third party property damage claims.
  • Retains and directs out-of-province independent adjusters, appraisers and private investigators in the investigation of claim issues and loss details.
  • Adjusts total loss claims using specialized valuation techniques, understanding the nature and location of the loss.
  • Negotiates with independent tow contractors and trucking fleets to facilitate cost effective recovery of damaged vehicles; develops knowledge of tow operations to mitigate and negotiate these losses.
  • Monitors and negotiates repairs that often contain multiple components and involve out-of-province, non-accredited repair facilities to ensure appropriate, timely and cost effective repairs.
  • Interprets, analyzes and confirms coverage in accordance with Acts, Regulations and relevant legislation.
  • Conducts research into case law, liability, jurisdictional matters, quantum and coverage issues.
  • When coverage issues exist, recommends coverage, denials, or creates referrals to the Claims Coverage Committee as required.
  • Supports Service Centre adjusters with issues involving out-of-province and jurisdictional issues.
  • Develops and applies knowledge of policy wordings and jurisdictional law to confirm coverage, investigate liability, defend actions and subrogate MPI interests.
  • Engages and effectively communicates with customers during the claims process to ensure their awareness of timelines, entitlements and claim issues.
  • Processes claims to meet or exceed customer service standards.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of the Adjuster Training Program (maximum 24 months).
  • Four course credits from the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) Program.
  • Four years’ experience in a related technical position such as adjusting.
OR
  • Completion of the Adjuster Training Program (maximum 24 months).
  • A diploma in Business Administration or related discipline
  • Two course credits from the CIP Program.
  • Three years’ experience in a related technical position such as adjusting.
