The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is responsible for the stewardship of the Port of Vancouver, Canada’s largest and most diversified port. Our mandate as a Canada Port Authority, as set out by the Canada Marine Act, is to enable Canada’s trade objectives, ensuring goods are moved safely and responsibly through the Port of Vancouver. That means providing infrastructure and ensuring the safe and efficient movement of marine traffic and cargo within the port. It also means we carry out reviews of proposed activities and developments on federal port lands and waters to determine whether a project can go ahead without impacts to the environment and community that cannot be mitigated.

The marketing communications advisor is responsible for the research, analysis, development, implementation and evaluation of strategic marketing communications and trade media in support of Trade Development and divisional initiatives. This position actively participates in the development and implementation of strategic customer communications and provides advice to develop and implement integrated and multi-channel marketing communications to promote the Vancouver gateway in alignment with the port’s business plans, corporate messaging and related initiatives. The position develops trade specific content and marketing communications and undertakes other activities as directed.


The Marketing Communications Advisor will:


Marketing Communications Planning

  • Actively participates and advises on the development and implementation of the marketing communications strategy in support of the marketing plan across the business sectors, and consistent with the port authority’s customer engagement strategy.
  • Recommends opportunities to leverage the port brand at various industry trade shows, conferences, events and other customer engagement opportunities, and supports senior and executive leadership participation as required.
  • Provides advice and analysis in the selection, development, implementation and measurement of integrated and multi-channel marketing communications tactics.
  • Works closely with the marketing communications coordinator to implement tactics.

Earned and Paid Media Strategy


  • Develops and recommends departmental earned and paid media strategy.
  • Recommends proactive media tactics including pitching and writing articles, writing and producing features, industry award applications, as well as prepares content in response to information requests from industry publications.
  • Liaises with advertising agency, creative designer, publications and other external contractors to ensure key messages and branding are articulated across all creatives.
  • Identifies and pursues earned media opportunities.
  • Develops and implements the annual media plan.

Writing and Content Development

  • Creates original content to support customer strategic communications and increase awareness of the port authority’s mandate and role, as well as the importance of the Port of Vancouver’s competitive advantages, to industry audiences.
  • Researches, writes and develops content for distribution to business audiences across multiple mediums including, but not limited to print and digital publications, website, social media platforms, PowerPoint presentations, video and podcasts.
  • Works with internal market and customer intelligence personnel to design, publish and disseminate developed research, think-pieces and publications for internal and external audiences.
  • Provides divisional support by designing and developing marketing communications content and tools for the Division.

Customer Engagement and Outreach Support

  • In collaboration with customer facing representatives, builds relationships outside of the organization with key customers’ communications and marketing staff for the purpose of developing joint/aligned messaging

The successful candidate will have completed a university degree in communications, journalism, marketing, political science, or another acceptable discipline, along with a minimum of four years in strategic communications in a corporate environment, including a minimum three years related experience in developing marketing communication plans and producing business communications collateral for trade publications. Experience in integrated marketing communications which includes digital communications (eg. social media), digital advertising (eg. Search media) and digital trade marketing as required. Must have experience supporting complex customer engagement and dealing with large national and international customers. Must have excellent writing and editing skills with the ability to synthesize complex information.



Must be a self-motivated, creative and innovative individual who consistently demonstrates initiative. Must have excellent interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy and the ability to liaise and collaborate effectively and positively with staff and external contacts at all levels. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a talent for writing and editing. Must be a team player with a "customer service" focus and a tolerance for ambiguity. Good organizational skills, technological competency in web-based and social media content, a results orientation and flexibility to perform multiple tasks are required
