About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Pharmacy, the Pharmacy Manager - Operations is responsible for the safe, effective and efficient provision of drug distribution services. The Manager works collaboratively with other members of the Department’s Leadership Team in a co-leadership model to ensure compounding, preparation and delivery of medications for patients meet high standards for quality and patient safety and is aligned with strategic priorities of the Pharmacy Department and NSHA.


In addition, the Manager oversees drug procurement and inventory management, pharmacy practice assistant competency assessment and certification and health technology assessment (drug distribution systems). The Manager oversees the selection, training and evaluation of pharmacy practice assistants, students, clerical and support staff with respect to expected performance and competencies and supports the operational, fiscal and strategic objectives of the Pharmacy Department and NSHA. The Manager is also responsible to ensure that all programs and initiatives are consistent with the mission, vision, values, strategic directions and business plan of NSHA.

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Completion of a formal, recognized pharmacy technician training program
  • Licensed as a pharmacy technician in Nova Scotia, through the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists
  • Completion of a management training program preferred
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a hospital setting managing human, financial and material resources allocated to Pharmacy service would be considered an asset
  • Proficient with computers and office administration programs, specifically MS Office, Outlook, SharePoint and MS Teams. Experience with pharmacy software and technology (i.e. Meditech, BD Pyxis, Omnicell) preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and collaborative skills
  • Demonstrated collaborative practice with pharmacy practice assistants, pharmacists, learners, nursing, physicians and managers.
  • Must possess strong planning, evaluative and leadership skills; have demonstrated fiscal management skills, strong time management skills
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare issues and collective agreements

More About You

  • Excellent knowledge of hospital pharmacy practice; including safe medication practices, quality improvement methods, computerized unit dose and traditional drug distribution systems, unit dose packaging equipment and intravenous and chemotherapy preparation systems; controlled drugs, legal acts and Provincial regulations governing the profession of Pharmacy, and standards set forth by the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists, Accreditation Canada and other applicable standards.
  • Ability to prioritize, problem solve and work under pressure of time limitations is required.
  • Previous experience with LEAN workflow analysis and review an asset.
  • Previous experience with Failure Mode Effects and Analysis review (Quality Review) is an asset
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Compensation and Incentives

$33.08 - $41.35 Hourly
