Job Summary:
We are currently seeking an HSE Manager with a minimum of 10 years of related progressive experience in HS&E. This role entails overseeing Ensign Canada’s HSE and Field Training programs for Drilling and Well Service operations in Canada, which are instrumental in supporting the company’s journey towards operational excellence. The primary objective is to ensure that the HSE strategic plan and its associated initiatives have a positive impact on company culture and overall performance. Additionally, the role requires aligning these programs with the business objectives, operational needs, capital planning, resource staffing, and budgeting.

As such, moderate to frequent travel is required, and the candidate must be willing to work outside of normal office hours. Travel to Calgary and to Field locations will be required. (Approx 60%)

Reporting to the Vice President of Health, Safety, and Environment; the ideal candidate should have experience in the onshore oil and gas industry, possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, a high level of motivation/work ethic, and a proven track record in managing a diverse customer base.

The salary range for this position is between $110,000 to $175,000 annually.
Specific Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
  • Lead, coach, and mentor a team of dedicated safety professionals
  • Communicate safety concepts, initiatives, and results to senior level management and occasionally the Board of Directors
  • Draft and review safety communications and materials including policies, procedures, incident reports, bulletins, and campaigns
  • Provide leadership on corrective action implementation
  • Develop, launch, and monitor safety related training programs, ensuring the training is in accordance with business needs, with the right balance of global consistency and local requirements
  • Establish initiatives and targets to track and measure the successes of safety programs, and highlight gaps or areas where improvement is needed
  • Conduct regular visits to field locations to promote Ensign’s Operational Excellence expectations and proactively build relationships with Ensign’s clients
Qualifications:
  • A valid Driver’s License and Passport with ability to travel to various sites in Canada, US and International as required (30%) and eligible to drive Company vehicle including ability to meet requirements of Company’s Vehicle Use Agreement and Driving Policy
Technical Competencies:
  • Strong computer proficiency, including proficiency with presentations, written and email communication including use of MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.)
  • Knowledge and understanding of current applicable legislation
Behavioral Competencies:
  • Ability to think strategically and translate thoughts into tactical actions
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Education and Experience:
  • Education from an accredited university or college, ideally in a Safety, Engineering, or Leadership program
  • A minimum of 10 years related experience with progressive experience in HS&E
  • CRSP or CSP designation preferred
Other Accountabilities:
This position involves working in both office and field locations, as well as travelling to a wide range of locations. The role requires variable work hours, including after-hours, weekend, and holiday commitments, as well as regular travel within and outside the assigned region.

The HSE Manager must prioritize contract closure and maintain a professional attitude when interacting with all company and customer representatives. Strong interpersonal skills are essential, with the ability to work closely with others and manage customer interactions with professionalism and tact.
  • Business Ethics – Understands fully Ensign’s ethics policy and its application in all business dealings including contractual agreements and contract negotiations
  • Business Policies - Understands and agrees to follow all of Ensign’s Policy and Directives and procedures as set forth in the Ensign Company Policy and Basic Directives Handbook for Employees
  • Certifications– Maintains technical and safety certifications required by company or government agencies; remains current on all OSHA, EUSD and other required training
  • Drug-free workplace - Conforms to a drug-free workplace, not be under the influence of mind-altering prescription or non-prescription drugs, including alcohol and other drugs of abuse.
  • Occupational Health and Safety – Understands fully the Ensign Health and Safety policy and self-responsibility for own health and safety at work; Demonstrates responsibility to avoid adversely affecting the health and safety of others through any act or omission
  • Uses the correct protective clothing and equipment as provided by Ensign and guards against misuse or damage to such equipment
  • Reports any hazardous situations arising in the workplace that cannot be self-corrected, or injury incurred during the course of work, no matter how minor
  • Avoids injury resulting from manual handling tasks, by use of risk assessment, correct mechanical handling equipment and correct manual handling techniques
