JUNIOR / INTERMEDIATE ELECTRICAL, CONTROLS & INSTRUMENTATION DESIGNER
AMIX SYSTEMS is looking for a talented and committed Junior / Intermediate Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation Designer to support various aspect of the engineering process including PLC and HMI development, instrumentation, troubleshooting, commissioning, documentation, and drawings.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
Design
· Designing and drafting of electrical systems including creation of single-line diagrams (SLDs), Electrical Schematics, Bill-of-Materials (BOMs), wiring and cable schedules.
· Redlining and updating drawings for projects and from vendors while keeping proper document and revision control.
· Specifying electrical equipment, components to support equipment design.
· Overseeing the construction and testing of control panels and junction boxes.
· Overseeing the wiring of all components to create a functional system/equipment package.
· Develop functional specifications, control narratives (FRS), and their interface with piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
· Undertake trade-off evaluations of equipment/component alternatives and input for trade-off studies.
· Ensure RFP bid submission compliance for electrical design, drawings, and proposal specifications.
· Assist in the preparation of motor load, instrument lists.
· Assist with the preparation of capital, operating cost estimates, manpower estimates, cost analysis and other areas as appropriate.
· Develop or bring forward, as appropriate, industry best practices and new technologies.
· Support in the preparation and review of project proposals, studies, and technical reports.
· Collaborating with other EC&I engineers and controls programmers to advance the state-of-the-art used in our control systems and HMI interfaces.
Projects
· Ensure the proper integration of the EC&I design within the requirements of the industrial process plant and owner(s)/owner(s) engineers;
· Review programming of control systems PLCs and HMIs, including Allen-Bradley RS/CompactLogix, Schneider-Electric Modicon, Siemens STEP 7 and other PLC platforms;
· Oversee the building and testing of control panels and junction boxes;
· Configuring control networks and communication systems;
· Support preparation of RFP/RFQ documentation to suppliers;
· Participate in HAZID/HAZOP studies to support decision making;
· Preparation of engineering documents including control philosophies, functional descriptions, manuals, and standard operating procedures; and,
· Oversee the cost effective, safe, and timely completion of projects that meet or exceed expectations.
Product Development
· Develop or bring forward, as appropriate, recommendations for augmentation to existing technology to improve performance.
· Participate in the research, development and commercialization of new technologies, patents, and systems.
· Improve calculations and templates related to equipment sizing and cost bench-marking estimates.
· Provide recommendations for improved process control and work with controls/programming engineers to advance automation, remote control, and management systems.
Field-Acceptance Test (FAT) Responsibilities:
· Travel to vendor/supplier site locations to supervise inspection, testing and acceptance of products before they are shipped.
Commissioning Responsibilities:
· Travel to client mine site locations to support installation, commissioning and/or servicing/maintenance of equipment in the field.
· Lead electrical and instrumentation disciplines while on site.
· To configure and trouble shoot PLC and HMI controls systems.
Education and Experience:
Required
· Industrial Instrumentation and Process Controls Technician Diploma or a Journeyman Electrician with Canadian Red Seal designation alongside relevant work experience may also be considered. As an alternative, Bachelor’s in Electrical, Instrumentation/Controls engineering fields and be a registered EGBC P. Eng., and/or Engineer-in-Training, with ability to obtain within 6-months.
· Have a minimum of three (1) years’ experience in the EC&I field with instrumentation, electrical design and drafting capability.
· Must be familiar with low voltage electrical, communication systems, electrical panel fabrication, assembly.
· Must have a strong skillset in AutoCAD.
· Must have experience with quality assurance, inspection, and testing protocols.
· The ability to interrogate and improve functional specifications and manage engineering programs to completion.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer usage.
· Creative (out-of-the-box) thinking to facilitate project success/completion.
· Entrepreneurial mind-set and comfort working within a small, multicultural, collaborative team.
· Perform high level critical thinking and problem solving in an independent fashion.
· Highly detailed oriented to ensure 100% accuracy on documentation.
- Excellent communication skills (both oral and written).
- Flexibility to travel both locally and internationally.
- Valid drivers’ licence and passport.
Desirable Skills and/or Experience
· Fluency in a second language.
· PLC and HMI development or other programming languages
Work Schedule and Location:
· Monday to Friday (8 hrs. per day with flexible start end times).
· Full-Time, Located in Vancouver, BC:
o 80% - Head Office;
o 20% - Regional/International Travel to Customer Sites, Vendor Workshops (Various Locations);
· Site work and travel may require longer hours.
