About FPInnovations

FPInnovations is among the world’s largest private, non-profit research centers working in forest research. The organization helps the Canadian forest industry to develop pathbreaking solutions based on the unique attributes of Canada’s forest resources, favoring a sustainable development approach and taking full advantage of the industry’s considerable scientific, technological and commercial capital.

Description

Reporting to the Manager, Biorefining & Processes within the Bioproducts Innovative Center of Excellence (ICE), the candidate will join a team working to valorize forest biomass in different bioproducts to develop and implement the next generation of biorefinery in Canada. As well known, Forest feedstocks are mainly composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The main research & development activity of the team is to convert these polymers in different biochemicals (using low carbon & innovative processes) to substitute current petroleum-based chemicals. The team’s purpose is to diversify the forest industry opportunities and support the Canada’s Net Zero emission by 2050 commitment.

Responsibilities

  • The candidate will be in charge to improve an existing HPLC method to yield better separation and quantification of sugar monomers to support the research & development activities in the group. The candidate will work closely with team members specialized in the conversion of sugars and chromatography experts.
  • The candidate will also review the scientific literature on the different HPLC methods used to separate and quantify sugar monomers (the focus will be done on xylose and mannose). The candidate will work with the team to identify the key parameters (eluents, flow rates, temperature, columns…) to improve both accuracy & speed of the existing HPLC method developed by the team. The candidate will provide and implement a strong experimental workplan, analyse and discuss the results and make scientific recommendations for the research team. Work on this will require some trial-and-error and some expertise in analytical chemistry.

Skills & Qualifications

  • The candidate should be enrolled in Bachelor’s degree program in chemistry after the 2nd, preferably 3rd year of his university’s studies
