The department of Planning, Development and Recreation is seeking an Intern Building Official. The role of an Intern Building Official is to ensure homes, building and structures in our community meet the Provincial Building Code and are built right. This means examining and inspecting building construction and interpreting and applying the Ontario Building Code. As an intern Building Official, you’ll work in the Building & By-Law Division and play a vital role collaborating with home owners, developers, contractors, architects and engineers in the planning, building and growing of our Community.
This developmental position for an Intern Building Official with the City will offer you the training and certification required toward becoming a Building Official for the City. This role requires a friendly person who values customer service and takes pride in their work in ensuring that our built environment is safe for our residents at work, home and play.
The Intern Building Official is responsible for the review and approval of Building and Demolition Permit applications, inspections and approval of construction, the accounting and release of performance deposits and the approval of Occupancy Permits for residential and non-residential buildings under Division B - Part 3 & Part 9 regulated by the Ontario Building Code. This includesalldisciplines in the Building Code (Use and Occupancy, Structural, Plumbing, Mechanical, Fire Protection, Health and Life Safety),the Zoning By-lawand other applicable law,agreements and development approvals. Provides responsive technical, expert and professional advisory services related to the enforcement of the Ontario Building Code Act, the Ontario Building Code, and all applicable laws (federal, provincial and municipal), ensuring the minimum standards for public health, life safety, fire protection, access, environment and structural sufficiency are met in the design and construction of buildings in the City of Cornwall.
To be considered for the role, our candidates must have a minimum of a 3 year Diploma from a Technologist program in Architectural, Civil, Mechanical, Fire Protection of Construction Technologist or equivalent; Minimum of 18 months of general construction experience in building design and construction and inspection of buildings; Eligible to enroll in the Internship Program administered by the Ontario Building Officials Association; Must have successfully completed or eligible to complete the provincially mandated examination program administered by Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing relating to Building Code Act and the Ontario Building Code; and in the categories of qualifications that correspond to the types of buildings that will be inspected (reviews of drawings and inspection of construction), including plumbing and mechanical, as set out in the Ontario Building Code; Must possess a valid Class G Driver’s License or equivalent; Working knowledge of construction drawings (including architectural, structural, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and geotechnical drawings and specifications) combined with an understanding of the different types of regulations associated with the development approval process; Working knowledge of professional and technical practice in all disciplines of the design and construction of buildings (architectural, engineering, plumbing, mechanical, structural, geotechnical, project management, etc.); Working knowledge of the Building Code Act and the Ontario Building Code; Working knowledge of all referenced standards including Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Underwriters Laboratories Canada (ULC), and other approval agencies such as the Building Material Evaluation Commission (BMEC), the Canadian Centre for Construction Materials (CCMC) and the Technical Safety Standards Authority (TSSA); Knowledge of applicable Occupational Health and Safety Legislation; Bilingualism would be considered an asset.
The City offers a competitive starting rate of $35.79 per hour, 35 hours per week, and a comprehensive benefits package.
