Position Summary
The Hardware Designer conducts research, planning, design, development, and testing of electronics hardware for industrial process control systems, which includes measuring and controlling instrumentation, and other electronic systems and circuits.
Reports to: CTO
Responsibilities & Duties
- Conduct applied research for product design, development and testing in fields of electrical, electronic, and mechanical engineering.
- Collect and document requirements, assess feasibility, and develop physical specifications.
- Prepare material cost and time estimates.
- Plan, design, develop, and test electronics hardware for industrial process control systems, which includes measuring and controlling instrumentation, and other electronic systems and circuits. Implement revisions to, and maintenance of, printed circuit board (PCB) designs and Gerber files.
- Assist in planning, design and development of mechanical assemblies and equipment (e.g., mechanical jigs, fixtures and other tooling) for use in prototyping, functional testing, and calibration.
- Prepare internal test procedures and working instructions and conduct, or assist in the review of, validation and verification testing during the product development stages.
- Participate in developing product documentation, including product usage, characteristics and tolerances. Conduct, or assist in developing external manufacturing and assembly procedures and work instructions.
- Write internal test procedures and working instructions in-accordance to the quality management system (QMS).
- Provide technical support to cross-functional departments.
- Assist in troubleshooting and root cause analysis of electrical, and electronic circuits, sensors and systems.
- Comply with relevant industry codes & regulatory standards.
- Comply with policies and procedures as specified in the Argus Employee Policy Manual and Quality Management System.
- Knowledge of various communication standards & protocols (e.g., USB, RS-485, Ethernet).
- Understanding of communication networks.
- Working knowledge of a quality management system (ie: ISO 9001: 2008).Working knowledge of UL508A, CSA 22.2 No. 14, and Canadian and US NEC’s. General computer skills including MS Office.
- Proficient spoken and written English. Punctual, meticulous and reliable. Ability to work effectively in a team.
- Time management and personal organization skills.
- Project leadership.
- Control panel assembly.
- Experience in a manufacturing or test environment.
- Experience with control systems for protected horticulture environments.
- Minimum completion of a program in electrical or electronics engineering, technology or technician (or equivalent), from a recognized post-secondary institution.
- 3 – 5 years industry experience as a Hardware Designer (or equivalent).
- Experience in research, planning, design, development, and testing electronics hardware for industrial process control systems, which includes measuring and controlling instrumentation, and other electronic systems and circuits.
- Must be able to demonstrate a successful track records of completed design projects.
- Eligibility for registration with APEGBC, or ATTBC is an asset.
- Familiar with PCB design software tools (e.g., PADS).
- Broad knowledge of electrical and electronics engineering theory and practice.
- Working knowledge of EMC testing, and an understanding of FCC and CE requirements.
- Working experience with troubleshooting electronic circuits (e.g., analog circuits), and process control systems and instrumentation issues.
- Comprehensive understanding of hardware development and debug tools (e.g., oscilloscope, multi-meter, logic analyzer, and other lab test equipment).
