Farm Manager– Hydroponic Ethnoculturally appropriate Leafy Greens and Herbs

We are recruiting for a vertical farming social enterprise based in southern Alberta supplying ethnoculturally-appropriate vegetables to western Canadian customers. New Roots Vertical Farm is a start-up social enterprise seeking a Farm Manager with 5 years of experience growing vegetables in a hydroponic, controlled environment agriculture (CEA) environment, for a new production facility north of Calgary. Reporting directly to ownership, the Farm Manager will oversee cultivation of various ethnoculturally appropriate vegetables from seeding to harvest, the integrated pest management (IPM) plan, operational hygiene and CEA set points to ensure our superior quality standards are met. The Farm Manager is responsible for the production team’s adherence to our SOPs, the production schedule and its KPIs and the pursuit of continuously improving on our product quality.

Key Accountabilities Include:

· Supervise (on-site and possibly remotely) all cultivation and production tasks including but not limited to irrigation, fertigation, seeding, transplanting, harvesting, packaging, IPM and laboratory analysis, light recipe development and product QA.

· Overseeing seeding / transplanting / harvesting schedules to precisely project all plant needs on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis to meet our retail partner’s needs for weekly product supply.

· Training staff for continuous scouting and monitoring of the crop for health, pest and diseases, supported by personal on-site and/or remote oversight

· Develop and/or maintain plant production protocols and nutrient regiment.

· Establish and follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to maintain compliance with GFSI and other regulatory bodies regulations. Continuously review the SOPs and ensure standardization in their execution across staff.

· Ensure facility biosecurity meets our rigorous standards through on-site inspection, staff training and laboratory QA

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

· A degree from a recognized horticultural program with at least 3-5 years of commercial hydroponic grow experience is an asset

· Detailed knowledge of commercial plant cultivation including nutrient requirements, light requirements, temperature & humidity control, air flow, etc.

· Direct knowledge and experience with nutrient film technique (NFT) and ebb & flow systems in a vertical farming environment

· Detailed knowledge of plant diseases and plant treatment options

· Exceptional attention to detail with an accountable, proactive character & demeanour

· Strong people and communication skills to lead teams and set cultural example & expectations

· A problem solver, comfortable in a dynamic, multi-tasking environment

Physical Demand Requirements:

· Comfortable lifting to 50lbs.

· Able to work in loud environments for an extended period of time.

· Able to work in bright, warm, humid environments for an extended period of time.

Compensation:

A competitive salary is negotiable based on the successful candidate’s capacity and experience.

While this role is Monday to Friday, the grow is a 7 day per week operation with weekend checks by the production team. Availability to communicate with staff (phone or video) on weekends is required when and if they need direction on a matter of concern.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: $60,000.00-$80,000.00 per year
