Position Summary:

The HR Generalist will report directly to the Manager, Human Resources and serve as a point of contact for managers and employees, providing full cycle professional human resources support.

The HR Generalist will be part of a National HR team, working together to implement measures to increase employee engagement, morale, and satisfaction through HR best practices.

This position is 100% in-office at the Stratford location with some travel requirements to other Vicwest locations.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Labour and Employee Relations. Quick critical thinking and interpretation skills required when considering the Collective Agreement for union employees. Sound interpersonal acumen and a solutions-based mindset when handing both union and non-union employees.
  • Full Cycle Recruitment and Onboarding. Management of the entire recruitment process inclusive of keeping hiring managers updated throughout. Monitoring the local employment market, advising the management team of creative and unique measures in obtaining top talent. Promoting first-class onboarding processes.
  • Best Practice and Deployment of Company Policy and Procedures.Understanding of and being well-informed of current employment standards (ESA), human rights, common law standards and Vicwest policies and providing sound advice to employees.
  • Employee Engagement.Working with the HR team to boost employee morale, engagement and satisfaction. Create a positive employee experience for all levels.
  • Major Responsibilities:

    • Provide advice and support to managers on a broad range of day-to-day issues including performance management, collective agreement interpretation, and policy interpretation.
    • Support managers to recruit employees, draft non-union employee contracts/offer letters, ensuring consistency across all positions.
    • Onboard new employees, ensuring that payroll documentation and benefits enrollment forms are completed and that new employees understand policies and procedures related to their role and the organization.
    • Enhance Union partnerships by supporting harmonious labour relations and supporting dispute resolution procedures such as grievances.
    • Manage the benefits administration process including disability claims, communication with Sun Life, accommodation requests, early and safe return to work as well as transitional modified duties.
    • Lead and administer the performance management process, including advising clients on coaching techniques, corrective action and career management matters
    • Participate in developing and implementing HR policies to promote a healthy, safe and inclusive organization.
    • Proactively develop and facilitate employee engagement Initiatives.
    • Promote Vicwest’s core values.
    • Assist the operations’ team with Health and Safety protocols and training programs.

    Education and Experience:

    • College diploma or certificate in Human Resources and/or equivalent. Possession of, or working towards an HRPA designation such as CHRP, CHRL, CHRE would be a definite asset.
    • Minimum 3 years Human Resources experience in a manufacturing, unionized environment
    • Generalist knowledge in recruitment, compensation, benefits, labour and employee relations, training
    • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
    • Experience with negotiations, mediations, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
    • Ability to interpret legislation and collective agreements
    • Ability to coach and influence leaders
    • Ability to interpret situations and apply policies, practices, and legal information to resolve issues
    • National Travel requirement.
