The Health, Safety & Wellness Representative is accountable for overseeing, following through, and maintaining consistent approach to health, safety, and wellness. Continuously promoting and ensuring safe work practice, educating, and training our workers and ensuring compliance of all applicable occupational health and safety legislation.

The Health, Safety & Wellness Representative is integral in promoting a culture of health, safety, and wellness and so is expected to carry themselves in a professional manner and provide a positive example at all times.

Responsibilities:

  • The responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following:
  • Cultivate a safety-first culture. Take ownership of the implementation and promotion of the company’s Health, Safety & Wellness Program. Make recommendations to amend, revise, and modify as needed and ensure legal compliance.
  • Regularly inspect and evaluate multiple workplaces in order to identify any new, existing or potential hazards/risks, develop ideas, solutions and prescribe appropriate PPE to correct promptly. Maintain job hazard data base
  • Be the champion of the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC).
  • Follow up and investigate all incidents/accidents/near misses and report findings to take corrective action.
  • Facilitate worker orientations and education/certification training for WHMIS, MHE Certifications, Fall Arrest, harassment/bullying, etc.
  • Liaise with outside vendors to schedule other required H&S training, such as First Aid, JHSC certification, etc.
  • Gather, input, track, report and analyze all H&S records and documentation.
  • Spill Management. Arrange for spill kits and training employees to properly use them.
  • Ensure regular JHSC meetings are held, and meeting minutes are recorded in all facilities. Involve senior management where appropriate to follow through on action items.
  • Ensure contractors are compliant with H&S requirements.
  • Maintain and update H&S communication bulletin boards as per the OHS regulations.
  • Represent the Company with external audit officials e.g. MOL etc.
  • Provide support for employees with work from home arrangements as it relates to H&S.
  • Assess the psychological safety in our facilities and work with Human Resources towards creating a psychologically safe workplace.
  • Prepare and maintain a Crisis Management Plan and an Emergency Response Plan.
  • Arrange for the accreditation with WSIB Health and Safety Excellence Program.
  • Support the Company with the Environmental, Social, and Governance standards.
  • Work towards developing a Wellness Program as a preventative measure for improving employee’s overall health.
  • Supervisor relief – provide Supervisor relief coverage as needed.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Minimum of 4 years in a Health and Safety role, preferably within a warehouse/logistics or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Fluency in French is a strong asset.
  • In-depth understanding/knowledge of applicable H&S legislation, provincial and other regulatory guidelines and experience with safety best practices.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve issues.
  • Pro-active with great attention to detail and strong organization skills.
  • Teamwork oriented with ability to work independently.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and knowledge of data analysis.
  • Valid Driver’s License required to drive to various facilities.
  • First Aid and CPR certified or willing to complete.
  • Ability to spend time in the field in all environmental conditions as necessary; walking, standing, crouching, lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • The position requires primarily working days although some evenings and weekends may be required based on business needs.

Academic/Education Requirements:

Post-secondary education in Occupational Health, Safety & Wellness, or equivalent.
