  • Valid ‘G’ Ontario driver’s license
  • Police vulnerable sector check (required upon hire)
  • Legally able to work in Canada
  • All employees are required to show proof of both COVID vaccines, or proof of medical exemption prior to start date

Preferred
  • Experience working with volunteers

  • Awareness of second-hand market and retail trends
  • Knowledge of antiques, collectibles, and brand recognition
  • Experience with Point of Sales systems and processing cash transactions


Job Synopsis

This salaried full-time position is responsible for keeping up with inventory flow in a fast paced, high-capacity setting. This position works closely with the management team in the day-to-day requirements of the shop.
The Associate’s assignments are mainly in the workroom and may include:
  • The receiving area - loading and unloading vehicles and sorting donated items

  • The workroom area - cleaning and pricing donated goods, organizing overflow items and maintaining a flow of goods to the retail floor

  • Logistics – driving cube van of items to various locations (e.g. other shops, landfill etc.)

  • Occasionally the Associate will be needed in the retail area:
  • Cash – working as a cashier, assisting with floats and daily reconciliations

  • The retail floor - merchandising and replenishing shelves and maintaining shop cleanliness.


  • Working hours include evenings and Saturdays and are reflective of shop hours. The Associate will work in close collaboration with all of the shop staff team and volunteers.
    As required, the Associate will receive health and safety training including WHMIS and First AID, CPR upon hire.

    Key Responsibilities

    General
  • Serve as a brand advocate and ambassador for MCC mission and values in every interaction with customers and donors

  • Support Co-ordinators/Managers as needed to meet the demands of daily operations

  • Assist with special events and projects as needed

  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with volunteers

  • Greet customers and donors, respond to questions and provide outstanding customer service

  • Ensure MCC Ontario policies and procedures are followed


  • Workroom and Retail
  • Assist Coordinators in developing strategies to meet revenue targets in their areas of focus

  • Be proactive in maintaining clean workspaces that meet health & safety standards, in the workroom and on the retail floor

  • Assist with light cleaning to ensure immaculately clean retail and workroom environment (e.g. sweeping, dusting displays, recycling & garbage collection, etc.)

  • Assist in the ongoing organization of receiving area, workroom, sell-on items, and seasonal storage

  • Sort, clean and price donations in various departments as needed

  • Area of focus and responsibilities may be concentrated on key areas

  • Assist in maintaining the stock on the floor and setting up merchandise displays on the sales floor

  • Operate Point of Sale terminal and handle cash, gift cards and card payments with complete accuracy

  • Assist with cash floats and daily reconciliations

  • Use a discernable eye when dealing with antiques and collectibles, ensuring one-of-a-kind pieces are brought to the attention of the appropriate staff members

  • Drive cube van to and from recyclers, landfill, and transport goods to other locations etc.

  • Assist staff and volunteers with loading and unloading donors’ vehicles

  • Assist with accurate tracking and documentation of sell-on goods

  • Comply with all policies and regulations regarding donation acceptance

  • Ensure staff and volunteers follow all established protocols related to Covid-19


  • Other

  • Assist with kitchen responsibilities / Maintain and coordinate the volunteer break room

  • Share the news about MCC and MCC Thrift Shops in the community

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

  • Participate in MCCO orientations, provincial meetings, Peace Conference and Staff Development Day

  • Participate in a local faith community, being willing to use personal gifts within this community and model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful interaction with others

  • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ’s unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, partner agencies, the homeless and marginalized

  • Answer inquiries about MCC from constituency and general public; communicate MCC’s values, articulating the importance of MCC’s criteria for workers, all of whom serve as representatives of the Mennonite and Be in Christ churches which support MCC

  • Model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful daily interactions with staff and the public
