Are you a fundraiser with compassion for those experiencing homelessness? The Mustard Seed is seeking an energetic, relational, and organized part-time Fund Development Specialist to help eliminate homelessness and reduce poverty in Kamloops.


The Development Specialist in Kamloops will help rally community support and assist with building solid donor relationships for the ministry. Supporting the Donor & Community Development Officer, the Specialist will plan, manage, and implement development and community engagement activities by cultivating relationships with corporate and individual donors, key community and church stakeholders, and members of the business community. It is imperative for building support in the community that Mustard Seed ambassadors understand and have established relationships with our guests at the front line. This will provide meaningful relationships and context when garnering supports and fostering relationships in the wider community.

Reporting to the Director of Development and working collaboratively with the Fund Development team this is a challenging and dynamic role for a hard worker who has a strong result focused mindset.

The Specialist will actively facilitate a variety of opportunities for the community to support our mission, both financially and in spirit. This position is responsible for the execution of an integrated development plan that results in fostering community patronage, engagement activities and financial support.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support existing programs that increase awareness of the work of the Kamloops Mustard Seed regarding the issues of poverty and homelessness
  • Act as a project lead on several internal and third-party events
  • Collaborate with interdepartmental groups to leverage any relevant current programs and procedures, such as Donor Relations, Major Gifts, Legacy Giving, Community Engagement and Volunteer Resources
  • Prepare monthly reports and statistics on progress and activities achieved against the key performance indicators established

Development

  • Support the Donor & Community Development Officer in the implementation and execution of the Development strategy and program to nurture, solicit, and steward individual, corporate, church, and association donations to increase revenue for the Kamloops operations
  • Personally cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of individual and corporate donors $350K to $600K annually, with the goal of increasing donation revenue each year
  • Develop donor relationship with Third Party Events leadership
  • Support the fundraising program through effective gift acknowledgement and stewardship including the creation of thank you letters, impact reports, and personal correspondence where appropriate
  • Cultivate relationships with corporate and individual donors, key community and church stakeholders, and members of the business community
  • Maintain accurate donor records and facilitate donation processing in collaboration with Donor Relations team
  • Hands-on planning and coordination of all Development activities and special events
  • Schedule meetings and tours with donors
  • Report on the success of initiatives
  • Work with the Donor Relations team to ensure that gifts are coded correctly and that their information is kept up to date

Community Engagement

  • Establish strong rapport and relationships in the Kamloops community by representing our values in all community interactions including church, educational venues and community business leaders
  • Implement a strategic Community Engagement program aligned with and supportive of The Mustard Seed’s Strategic Plan in conjunction with the Community Engagement teams, and localize those strategies specific to the Kamloops community needs
  • Creatively and analytically identify strategic opportunities to cultivate and engage key supporters, providing opportunities to match supporters’ interests with organizational priorities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • A strong, Christ-centered, passion for helping people experiencing homelessness and poverty
  • A post-secondary degree or diploma
  • Preference given to an applicant with 1 to 3 years of experience in fundraising within a non-profit environment
  • Superior interpersonal skills, making presentations and public speaking skills, good listening and negotiation skills
  • Very comfortable cultivating relationships over the phone
  • Sound judgment and decision-making capabilities and the ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • A skill for building relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to professionally manage strategic partnerships with churches, consultants, businesses, and government representatives
  • Customer service experience is an asset. Two years of experience in a customer service role is preferred
  • A strong team player who can work collaboratively or independently
  • Highly results-oriented, and motivated to perform at a high level
  • Exceptional planning and prioritization skills, time management and organizational skills
  • Comfortable dealing with data and analytics
  • Some experience in Raisers’ Edge, Salesforce or other Donor Database Management system an asset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office programs, writing reports, & letters, working with spreadsheets
  • Demonstrated drive and initiative to accomplish results
  • Employment Security Check and Class 5 Driver’s License is required

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Some weekends and evenings may be required
  • Position located in Kamloops with occasional travel to surrounding cities
  • Required to drive personal vehicle and/or Seed Vehicle
  • Office environment – Moderate physical effort is required to successfully accomplish essential job function is moderate as the role requires administrative activities such as keyboarding, word process documents, enter data into database, responding to emails and donor communication. Some lifting, traveling, sitting, standing, walking, driving the vehicle etc. required as part of this role
  • Moderate physical effort required to assist with events that could involve lifting, standing long periods of time and working in various climates. Pro-longed periods of sitting, computer use
  • Moderate to extreme mental effort is required to meet deadlines, ensure accuracy of data and entry into database systems. Ability to handle and respond to occasional intense situations. Maintaining relationships and meeting revenue goals are required to be successful in the role. Attending and assisting with functions and events can also required both physical and mental efforts
  • Fast paced and demanding work environment
  • Local travel expected with some travel outside Kamloops through the surrounding community and to Calgary on occasion.
  • This role is approximately 55% Fund Development, 25% Administration including entry into Salesforce, Donor appreciation and 20% Events planning and organization

  • An Employment Background Check is required for all positions at The Mustard Seed
  • This position requires the use of a personal vehicle for company use. The candidate must have a valid driver’s licence and maintain $2M Vehicle Liability insurance on the vehicle being used.

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
