The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment has exciting Forester opportunities in the Forest Service Branch located in Prince Albert and Meadow Lake. Our Foresters support the sustainable growth of Saskatchewan’s forest sector on crown forests within the province.

As the Forester, you will:

  • work with strong team of operations staff responsible for regulating forest industry operations and ensuring compliance on Crown forest lands;
  • lead the review and approval of forest industry operating plans which authorize the harvest of forest products;
  • assist the Area Forester in the development of staff and monitor performance of people you may supervise from time to time;
  • assist the Area Forester in the management of work assignments/activities to meet unit, branch and ministry objectives and mandate;
  • foster a productive, effective, healthy, and respectful work environment;
  • participate in and from time to time lead in compliance related activities within the Prince Albert and Meadow Lake areas including field investigations, either self-initiated or in response to complaints/inquiries, gather necessary information and evidence, determine appropriate response, formulate and implement a course of action;
  • lead or participate in public consultations of forest management with a wide variety of people such as co-workers, stakeholders, media, First Nations and Metis communities, agencies, and the public;
  • interpret and apply applicable federal and provincial legislation and policies, programs and agreements relating primarily to forestry and environmental protection;
  • lead as a subject matter expert to provide forest policy direction and forest management expertise to other branches and government ministries, and support senior ministry staff on forest management and policy issues related to operations and operational planning; and
  • work with other resource management specialists in response to forest management challenges to develop solutions in keeping with the Ministry’s ecosystem management principles.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • knowledge of principles related to ecosystem-based forest management;
  • knowledge and understanding of process and policy development;
  • knowledge and understanding of provincial acts and regulations concerning the utilization and administration of forest resources;
  • knowledge and understanding of compliance and enforcement theories including natural resource law principles;
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • related forest industry or a government forestry agency experience with forest operations including: operational planning, harvesting, road construction and decommissioning, water crossing installation and reclamation, and boreal forest silviculture;
  • understanding of how operational activities and planning relate to higher level linkages between strategic and operational planning processes;
  • demonstrated ability to lead, support, create and sustain a team environment that enables staff to achieve results and to build organizational capacity for the future;
  • self-motivation and the ability to lead strategic initiatives and manage change;
  • ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with industry, Indigenous communities and the public;
  • ability to manage multiple projects by prioritizing work, multi-tasking and adapting to changing priorities while finding the time to laugh and enjoy working in the outdoors with your team;
  • ability to use a variety of computer software such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and database applications;
  • willingness to undertake fieldwork year-round and travel throughout Saskatchewan including remote locations;
  • ability to operate a 4-wheel drive pic-up truck and all-terrain vehicles in off road conditions while in full rain gear speckled with mud; and
  • commitment to workplace health and safety.

Typically, the competencies required for this position would be obtained through the completion of a Bachelor’s of Science in Forestry degree combined with related work experience. Consideration will be given to candidates graduating in April 2022.

The successful candidate must be eligible to obtain membership as an RPF within the Association of Saskatchewan Forestry Professionals within two years of commencement.
