Fiber Optic Utility Locate Technician

RFNOW Inc. is a fast-growing, forward-thinking telecommunications company based in Virden, MB and we continue to rapidly expand our footprint throughout Manitoba. We are looking for motivated individuals interested in joining our Construction and Maintenance Team. You will help lay the foundation of our business through the land preparation, and installation of fibre internet infrastructure.

RFNOW is rolling through Portage la Prairie area and have opportunities available now!

A Fiber Optic Utility Locate Technicianuses mechanical and technical equipment to accurately locate underground facilities such as, telephone lines, electrical power lines, cable television lines, gas lines, fiber optic lines, water lines, and sewer lines.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Communicate and interact daily with managers, crews, and homeowners to discuss locating issues.
• Use company provided locate equipment and technology to accurately locate underground utilities.
• Attend and pass instructor lead training to obtain locator certification.
• Read and interpret job order tickets, maps, and blueprints.
• Determine efficient route to each locate in rural and urban areas.
• Remove and replace manhole lids.
• Collect data using various GPS survey equipment, including RTK Systems.
• Use lap top computer to receive, document and email.
• Perform other reasonable duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be at least eighteen years of age.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Valid driver license – abstract required.
• Must be accountable, dependable, and trustworthy.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Locating experience preferred.
• Previous field experience as a surveyor is an asset, along with solid working knowledge of various GPS systems, including troubleshooting equipment and replacing parts in the field as needed is an asset.
• Proficiency with Geodatabases & Microsoft Office Productivity tools is an asset.

REQUIREMENTS

• Successfully complete company provided locator training.
• Requires the availability for call out, including some mandatory overtime.
• May require weekend and holiday work on occasion when necessary.
• Some travel may be required, including overnight stays and out-of-town assignments and/or training.
• Ability to walk all types of terrain (grass, ditches, wooded areas, gravel, etc.) in and around construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas in all types of weather conditions (rain snow, cold, heat, etc.)
• Must be able to operate a computer to document and close tickets.
• Must be able to work alone and independently.
• Comfortable driving remote, local roads with unpredictable features.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds to properly locate utility infrastructure.
• Standing for extended periods of time (>60 minutes) and considerable walking; 1-2 miles at least 2 to 3 times a week.
• Working outdoors including exposure to temperature extremes and variety of terrains.
• Ability to work in and walk all types of terrain.

Job Details

• Full Time (Monday to Friday)
• $22.50 - $25/hr depending on experience
