Job Overview:


Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Finance & Business Operations, the Executive Director, Finance is responsible for leading the fully compliant Finance function at Diabetes Canada. This includes outcomes executed by the Finance, Accounting and Payroll teams. Depending on the background and interests of the selected candidate as well as the outcome of organizational design work DC is currently undertaking, this role may also include supervision of the Donor Relations call centre staff and the oversight of a government-funded project, the Ontario Monitors program.


Scope of Role


Financial Reporting and Planning
  • Provide context, support, and advice to staff, senior leadership and the Audit, Investment & Risk Committee (AIRC) to enable clarity and the successful approval of relevant budgets or plans.
  • Structure and oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual production of financial statements and reports as needed by internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead and manage the development and dissemination of budgets and forecasts.
  • Support the creation and evolution of multi-year forecasts to support future planning or strategic plan development.
  • Conduct financial analyses, as needed, to complete activities described above

Accounting
  • Oversee accounting operations, enabling the timely and accurate completion of accounting entries. Ensure issues are resolved in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Ensure accounting activities align with accepted accounting principles and standards.
  • Complete needed reconciliations as required to ensure integrity with accounting data.
  • Working with IT as needed, help ensure accounting system technology is effective and efficient and meets prescribed needs.

Compliance, Controls and Audit
  • Ensure financial, tax and other key regulatory filings are developed, reviewed and accurate before remitting to relevant authorities.
  • Work to ensure appropriate internal controls are established and maintained and are consistent with relevant policies; where relevant policies are absent or deficient, work to improve and adopt.
  • Lead external auditors in the enterprise-wide annual audit and any program or sub-audits that might occur. These program or sub-audits would include the audit of the Pension Plan, Ontario Diabetes Trust, and Ontario Monitoring for Health Program.

Treasury & Investment Management
  • Ensure sufficient cash liquidity to meet obligations; develop and employ models as needed. Execute any needed checks and reconciliations to ensure the integrity of cash balance estimates.
  • Support the SVP in the management of investments in line with approved policies and practices in place at Diabetes Canada; work to evolve investment policies and practices as needed.

Risk
  • With the support of the SVP, lead enterprise risk management activities, ensuring a robust monitoring and reporting system exists for a wide range of relevant risks. Ensure senior leadership participation and senior leadership and board buy-in with risk reporting.

Payroll
  • Supervise the accurate & timely biweekly payroll runs and administration of employee benefits; liaise with the Executive Director, People & Culture on benefit programs and structures.

Team Leadership
  • Oversee the hiring, mentoring, training, and evaluation of an experienced, talented, and highly professional team that is well prepared to meet the ongoing opportunities and challenges of Diabetes Canada.
  • Inspire the team to achieve Diabetes Canada’s vision of improving the quality of life of those diagnosed with diabetes.
  • Foster a strategic and collaborative approach to building operational capacity.
  • Develop a culture of coaching and performance excellence to continually develop team capacity and create succession plans as needed for the team.
  • Illuminate a path to success for team members by promoting core and leadership competencies, key performance indicators and personal development goals.
  • Align with the Diabetes Canada values, and guide decisions and actions accordingly.

Other


  • Assist and/or lead interactions enabling the success of the AIRC of the board as it works to execute its governance activities.
  • Provide other support to the SVP Finance and Business Operations, to the CEO, to members of the Senior Leadership Team or to the Board, as needed and able.
  • Identify and implement process improvement activities to help enable enhanced efficiency and efficacy
  • Help coordinate the exploration of alternative accounting approaches (e.g., fund accounting) as needed

About You
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following skills and abilities:
  • University degree in finance, business administration, accounting or an equivalent field; Master’s degree an asset
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA or CGA) required
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience working in a Senior Finance leadership role – supporting all/most of the functions described above; 7-10+ years of related experience in a Senior Finance leadership role preferred
  • Proven success in leading and advancing a highly skilled professional team
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant accounting standards, regulatory requirements, payroll systems; good appreciation of best practices with cash management, planning, investment management and policy development
  • Superior communication skills
  • Strong negotiating, coaching, influencing skills
  • Excellent time management abilities
  • Good working knowledge of relevant IT systems that support finance/accounting, payroll and related functional areas; knowledge and experience with Unit 4, Blackbaud and Ceridian Dayforce preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the proven ability to plan, develop and execute creative approaches to complex financial issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and support continuous improvement
  • Experience in NFP sector considered a strong asset
