Job Summary

The Director works closely with the Associate Vice President to implement the Strategic Research Plan by supporting the development of faculty and student research proposals and engaging with industry, government agencies, and community organizations to develop mutually beneficial research programs.

The Director works with research project and program partners internally and externally to facilitate and manage connections for emerging and developing partnerships. The Director works closely with Research Chairs, and faculty researchers as a key contact to assist with research funding applications and processes.

The Director promotes and supports nominations for research awards, promotes undergraduate student research opportunities, and facilitates the development of research related policies and processes.

The Director
  • Takes a leadership role implementing the Research Strategic Plan.
  • Liaises with the Tri Council and other government agencies to support the research enterprise at UFV.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with faculty and administrators at UFV, and externally with community, regional, and international organizations.
  • Manages and directs the grants and contracts processes from pre- to post-award including preparing applications, budget development, grant and contract financial monitoring, and reporting.
  • Manages and oversees internal research and scholarly activity funding programs with assistance from the Research Office Assistant.
  • Acts as liaison with funding agencies, industry partners, and the UFV community.
  • Acts as the first point of contact for principal investigators seeking research funding and advises them on rules, regulations, and submission procedures for funded applications.
  • Assists in the development, submission and tracking of grant proposals.
  • Reviews applications for research grants to ensure consistency with agency priorities and University policies.
  • Provides information regarding research-related resources, programs, deadlines, application materials, regulations, and policies.
  • Seeks out funding sources and research opportunities for faculty and students.
  • Promotes undergraduate student research opportunities, including graduate scholarship applications, research assistantships and student presentation grants, reviewing and approving requests, contracts and timesheets.
  • Promotes and supports nominations for research prizes, awards, and recognition events.
  • Works closely with current research chairs and prepares new applications with nominated and renewing Canada Research Chairs.
  • Facilitates research collaboration between faculty and external partners.
  • Manages systems for research tracking, compliance and accountability.
  • Organizes and conducts workshops to assist in writing and preparing funding proposals.
  • Communicates in a respectful and professional manner with all members of the team, department, University community, and external partners.
  • Collaborates effectively as a team member, including sharing information, cross training and interpersonal cooperation.
  • Demonstrates respect for all members of the UFV community, actively contributing to an environment of acceptance and inclusivity of others.
  • Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of the position.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a master’s degree required. Doctoral degree is preferred.
  • 5 of years of research related experience in a post-secondary environment.
  • Experience with managing the research grants process and strategic research initiatives desired.
  • Experience liaising with external agencies (such as SSHRC, NSERC, and CIHR) institutions/partners.
  • Evidence of progressive career development, including involvement in research, developing research proposals, ability to generate funding from a variety of sources, and a proven record of success.
  • Demonstrated record of engaging with industry, communities, and government research partners.
  • Demonstrated creative thinking and innovative problem solver,
  • Superior diplomacy skills and ability to work with faculty, industry, business, and stakeholders from diverse disciplines.
  • Superior interpersonal and written/oral communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills; self-directed, proactive, and discreet.
  • Proven ability to work in a collaborative team environment, work to deadlines, and manage competing priorities.
