Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Development, the Development and Communications Coordinator is responsible for strengthening the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s visibility and brand in the province of Alberta. They will play a key role in the areas of planning, writing and editing print/digital communications and publications. They will manage media and public relations, be a spokesperson for NCC at interviews and events, and be responsible for fulfilling the Alberta region’s communications deliverables. They will work collaboratively with regional and national staff to deliver on a communications program designed to enhance NCC’s profile and, directly or indirectly, support its fundraising capacity in Alberta. The Development and Communications Coordinator is a confident and strong communicator (both written and verbal) with the ability to proactively build key media contacts in core areas of interest.

Key Responsibilities

Media and Partnership Liaison - 45%

  • Act as the lead Alberta Region spokesperson for all media inquiries;
  • Build awareness and support for NCC, its programs and partners;
  • Grow earned media exposure through developing news releases and feature pitches, actively seeking opportunities to raise awareness of NCC Alberta Region activities;
  • Develop relations and maintain key media contacts, create media materials and lists;
  • Plan and execute a variety of media events and opportunities;
  • Work closely with outside contractors, including photographers, to enhance our ability to share stories across the communities in which NCC operates;
  • Advise and mentor other staff in public relations and communications while ensuring subsequent materials conform to national and regional standards and policies;
  • Raise awareness for the work NCC does and participate in partner communication initiatives, such as committees and working groups;
  • Leverage achievements, to enhance organization’s profile on multiple platforms.


Content Creation and Distribution - 35%

  • Develop regional communications materials. This includes, but is not limited to, written materials, property and interpretive signs, speeches, advertisements, and presentations for use by regional staff for both internal and external audiences;
  • Contribute content where needed for National communications publications, both printed and electronic;
  • Ensure technical information is readable and appealing for various audiences;
  • Maintain and enhance the quality of communication material/products;
  • Adhere to NCC brand standards and style guides;
  • Foster a culture of storytelling;
  • Provide writing and editing support to program and development staff for outbound donor communications;


Manage Communications for Specific Projects and Programs - 15%

  • Support the development and delivery of communications deliverables for specific conservation projects, or deliverables required to fulfill NCC’s contractual obligations of partnership agreements and grants;
  • Support the development and delivery of communications deliverables outlined in NCC’s Natural Area Conservation Plans;
  • Help with the promotion of regional fundraising campaigns and projects to raise NCC’s profile across the communities in which we operate;


Other - 5%

  • Management of digital assets inventory;
  • Work closely with NCC Alberta’s engagement team to represent NCC in a variety of external relations and communications functions.


Skills and Aptitudes

  • 3-5 years demonstrated successful experience in a communications role;
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in journalism, communications, public relations or other related field;
  • Exceptional verbal and written communications skills, including presentation skills in English essential;
  • Experience writing a variety of communications products including news releases, speeches, articles, etc.;
  • Portfolio of work (media, print and web) designed to engage broad audience;
  • Demonstrated, effective media relations experience;
  • Experience, and interest in communicating natural sciences with the ability to communicate technical language in an easy-to-read and engaging way;
  • Experience researching, developing and managing partnerships with community, corporate, and government institutions;
  • Experience managing 3rd party contractors for the creation and production of communications/ marketing materials an asset;
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office, web publishing tools, and Adobe Creative Suite;
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced and changing environment;
  • Commitment to core values and mission of Nature Conservancy of Canada;
  • Demonstrated interest in land conservation and stewardship as well as natural heritage programming;
  • Valid Alberta driver’s license.
