Overview
The Conservation Planning Coordinator is responsible for the coordinating the development of landscape-scale conservation plans and assisting with other planning projects and activities across functional areas. This role will support NCC’s commitment to, and leadership in, evidence-based conservation planning and decision-making within an adaptive management framework and focus on partnership and community-driven conservation action. The role will require a team-based approach to collaboration with staff across all functional areas, partner organizations, industry partners, local governments and communities, and a focus on relationship building and collaboration with Indigenous communities and partners.
The position requires a multi-disciplinary, professional individual with experience and strong interest in facilitation, collaborative conservation / community planning, ecology, conservation biology, social ecological systems, and community and Indigenous engagement.
Reporting Relationships
The Conservation Planning Coordinator reports to the Conservation Science Manager,* Manitoba*, and will work closely with NCC Natural Area Managers, Stewardship Program Manager, Director of Conservation, and Community Relations Manager, as well as staff rom NCC’s national office and other regions. This role will also require coordinating with a core planning team of external partners and include an informal requirement to collaborate with funder and partners organizations that are co-leads with NCC on multi-partner initiatives.
Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and lead the development of Natural Area, and multi-partner landscape-scale conservation plans using the Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation
  • Coordinate, lead and facilitate conservation planning, climate change adaptation, and community engagement focused workshops
  • Collaborate with external partners, academics, local government, Indigenous communities, landowners and communities, to collaboratively develop conservation-based strategic planning initiatives
  • Support the creation of joint community relations strategies as part of the larger conservation plans, including community engagement, marketing, communications, and fundraising activities
  • Assist with the development and delivery of effective communication materials and vehicles to engage participants, local communities and partners on conservation planning efforts and outputs
  • Ensure the completion, adaptation and updates of NCC’s NACPs following required policies and standards
  • Support and advance NCC’s commitment to truth and reconciliation efforts through the implementation of NCC’s Indigenous Conservation Engagement Framework recommendation as part of community engagement in conservation planning initiatives
  • Assist with the development of impact-based metrics for describing our conservation outcomes

Skills and Qualifications

  • Preference for a post graduate degree, in ecology, conservation biology, natural resources; environmental science or studies; social science, or related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience undertaking conservation projects within the framework of the Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation, Healthy Country Planning or similar adaptive management planning framework
  • Demonstrated experience with project planning and management, and working on interdisciplinary teams
  • Experience interacting and engaging comfortably with a range of external conservation organizations, local community members; Indigenous peoples and communities, government representatives, researchers, NGO partners, and industry partners;
  • Flexibility, reliability, self-motivation, a “can-do” attitude with the ability to work independently
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and an ability to make creative, sound decisions;
  • Well-developed written, verbal, listening and overall communication skills;
  • Experience in developing technical reports, scientific papers, monitoring protocols and presentations;
  • Experience or familiarity with Geographic Information System (ArcGIS) an asset
  • Knowledge of vegetation community types: prairie, forest and wetland ecology; related land management practices and industries in Manitoba; and experience developing or implementing monitoring and reporting on the effectiveness of conservation or land management activities;
  • Strong interest in the environmental field and the vision and mission of NCC;
  • Must be prepared to travel and work flexible hours.
