POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION:Community Chef (3-month contract)

START DATE:Monday September 25th, 2023 END DATE:December 22nd, 2023 This contract covers a staff medical leave and may be extended if required.

HOURS OF WORK:4.5 days a week (up to 30 hours weekly) Monday (12 – 7:30) Tuesday to Friday (9-4)

occasional weekends or evenings for special events

WAGES:$20.70 hourly (up to 30hours weekly)

POSITION SUMMARY:This contract position will work in partnership with The Local’s Food Skills Educator to prepare and deliver three community meals a week. The position requires the ability to effectively work with and the develop volunteer teams that support meal production and service. In addition to meal preparation, delivery and clean up this position is responsible for ensuring a high standard of cleanliness, health and safety and maintenance in the kitchen and food handling. Other duties may include assisting with special events and programs as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:The ideal candidate is passionate about good food—and wants to contribute to ensuring that everyone has access to it. They have an understanding of the power of food and the many positive impacts it can have from supporting the health and social wellbeing of our community members, to building social ties, to supporting local farmers. The community chef will be a great cook whose food models the principle that healthy food can also be delicious food. They will possess strong leadership skills balanced with an ability to create a supportive environment in the kitchen for a diverse team of volunteers that will enable volunteers to develop skills and leadership.

  • 3 years experience with large scale food preparation and kitchen management
  • Demonstrated ability plan and prepare healthy, delicious meals for up to 150 people
  • Safe Food Handling certificate essential
  • Diploma/degree in a related field of study (culinary or nutrition)
  • Experience working in with volunteers and community members
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities using a strengths-based approach,showing sensitivity to those who experience poverty/discrimination
  • Ability to work in a kitchen environment – including heavy lifting and carrying, extended periods of standing, repetitive movements in food preparation
  • Experience working or volunteering in a community based organization an asset

RESPONSIBILITIES:Oversee preparation of meals for our community meal program
Work with Kitchen Skills Facilitator to plan menus for community meal program thatreflect our philosophy and commitment to healthy food.
Prepare meals for distribution to through The Connection Centre as required.
Support and oversee team of volunteers to prepare and serve meals.
Provide training and instruction to volunteers as needed.
Guide volunteers in safe food handling, and high standards of health, safety andcleanliness practices in the kitchen.
Create and maintain a safe, welcoming, and dignified environment for community mealattendees and volunteers. Kitchen Maintenance and Coordination
Maintain kitchen at a high standard of health, safety and cleanliness.
Work with Kitchen skills Facilitator to ensure maintenance of equipment and resourcesin the kitchen.

Program Tracking and Storytelling

  • Implement tracking tools and evaluations demonstrating community kitchen/dining room output, attendance, and activity.

Participate as The Local Community Food Centre Team Member

  • Support other program staff and events as needed.
  • Attending staff meetings; trainings; agency functions as appropriate.
  • Role model professional behavior and positive communication with participants,volunteers, and partners.
  • Promote culture of health and safety within our space.
  • Adhere to all LCFC and CFCC policies.
