The BC SPCA is looking for a highly self-motivated and creative Communication Officerfor a permanent/full-time role;with a can-do attitude to join our busy Communications Team.

Reporting to the General Manager (GM), Community Relations, this position provides writing, editing, video production, graphic design and marketing support for a wide range of external and internal communication initiatives for the BC SPCA. This position supports communication activities that increase our effectiveness in advocacy, providing education around animal welfare issues and in concert with our fundraising efforts.

As the successful candidate you will have strong written and verbal communications skills, and have the ability to independently manage a varying workload. You excel at creative problem solving and possess a strong knowledge of communications, media and public relations.

Your excellent attention to detail allows you to work efficiently within a busy work environment while maintaining accuracy and quality. Your ability to handle multi-tasking activities and excellent organizational skills will be highly used in a fast-paced team environment.

What you will do:

  • In conjunction with the GM, Communications creates new content for media, social media and the website to promote the mission, vision and strategic direction of the society, and refreshes existing evergreen website content.
  • Builds and manages a robust content calendar that integrates into the overall marketing calendar for the organization and the strategic plan.
  • Optimizes content that is driven by keyword research, ensuring that content is targeted and ranking for the most relevant search terms.
  • Analyzes and reports on the success of content and uses data to drive decisions. Tracks and monitors performance for all campaigns against agreed KPIs. Provides direct feedback/analytics with the goal to improve response and engagement.
  • Produces short animal-related videos for BC SPCA social media channels.
  • Produces digital photography to accompany news stories and website content.
  • Writes press releases, magazine articles, public service announcements and media advisories.
  • Posts content on website and distributes releases to media.
  • Liaises with BC SPCA branches and departments to promote animal stories, programs and events.
  • Provides content for internal and external e-newsletters.
  • Provides back-up support for social media as required.
  • Proactively maintains media lists and carries out other administration duties within the Communications Department.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Post-secondary degree in communications or public relations plus three to five years’ related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer; related experience includes, but is not limited to:

o WordPress, Google Analytics, Photoshop and Adobe Premier Pro

o Social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)

o SEO-focused copywriting/content marketing role writing against an editorial calendar

  • Excellent writing skills for website, social media content and news releases
  • Excellent editing/proofreading skills
  • Strong skills in digital photography and videography/editing
  • Experience in the media an asset
  • Domain knowledge: SEO and Google Analytics – plus content marketing technology and tools.
  • Highly adaptable and collaborative
  • Ability to work with a wide range of individuals and groups
  • Must enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and be able to project manage your own work while communicating status within teams
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Philosophical harmony with the mission, vision and strategic direction of the BC SPCA
