Communications Coordinator

Richmond School District operates 38 elementary schools, 10 secondary schools, alternate programs, continuing education and a number of additional facilities. The district enrolls approximately 21,000 students (K-12) and employs over 3000 dedicated staff.

Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Communications, the Communications Coordinator is a key member of the communications team and is responsible for conceiving, developing, editing, and distributing communications and marketing content. This position will shape and express the district’s strategic objectives by overseeing the creative concept, design and execution of numerous projects.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

(This is not an exhaustive list of the duties to be performed.)

Assist the district in becoming a more connected learning community by developing communication and marketing strategies that take into account the district’s objectives, budgets, target audiences, and district brand standards.

  • Engage with staff and stakeholders to understand how the district can better serve and inform the public with relevant, timely and accessible information.

  • Collaborate with other departments to discuss and define communication objectives that ensure our students’ voices and perspectives are valued, encouraged and embedded.

  • Update, manage and produce engaging content surrounding district events, programs, operations and activities. You will be able to recognize potential stories of interest and have solid research, writing and editing skills to present those stories in an effective manner.

  • Update the district’s intranet and ensure that employees have easy access to tools that help them do their jobs. Furthermore, you will continue to expand the intranet into a collaborative environment that allows employees to exchange and gather information.

  • Update district and school websites through the use of content management systems’ (CMS) and social media accounts to inform the public and provide intuitive access to information.

  • Develop district templates and implement the necessary processes and procedures that ensure that staff adopt and utilize the appropriate materials.

  • Coordinate, develop and oversee video and photography assets. Ensures that all work is properly filed and maintained for ease of retrieval.


  • Ensures district policies and provincial and federal laws are adhered to when publishing information digitally and in print. Maintains current relevant knowledge of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA).

Required Qualifications

Grade 12 or equivalent plus a minimum of a diploma in Communications or Marketing and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a similar role, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Writing, editing and proofreading skills, and the ability to adapt tone and style to various audiences and media, including print, broadcast and web.

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience with leading web platforms and content management systems (CMS) such as Drupal and SharePoint.

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience managing social media channels, developing content calendars and increasing engagement.

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience managing email marketing and email databases to ensure effective communication with the appropriate audiences.

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience using Google Analytics, Google AdWords, and Google Webmaster Tools to derive insights and implement improvements.

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience using Adobe Photoshop including the ability to retouch photography or to edit graphics.

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience using Adobe InDesign, including the ability to create single or multi page layouts, as well as templates incorporating paragraph and character styles.

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience with photography equipment and ability to conceptualize and capture photos.

  • Working knowledge of graphics, logos, layout and design fundamentals.
Ability to organize workload, work under pressure and perform duties with minimal supervision.

  • Strong interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and productively in a team environment.

This position is in the bargaining unit, with an hourly rate of pay of $29.40 (subject to Job Evaluation review) plus a benefit package of medical, extended health, dental and a pension plan.
