Job Summary

Reporting to the National Director of Category Management, the Category Manager will support the development and implementation of category strategies to drive sales and profit growth as defined by senior management as most critical to achieving the annual financial and merchandising objectives for the organization

The Category Manager will be responsible for achieving and delivering complete P&L budgeted results for a business unit.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Review and manage category budgets and report back to Senior Management corrective action required to achieve budget monthly.
  • Manage the profitability of category sales through planogram selection and vendor negotiations.
  • Work with all National Brand Vendors to ensure the appropriate level of investment occurs within the category portfolio.
  • Negotiate the annual trade agreements with all assigned vendors to maximize all revenue streams including over/above promotional activities
  • Develop and monitor category strategies and plans for all elements of the merchandising mix, i.e. product mix, pricing strategies, promotional mix, promotional events, corporate brand strategies
  • Provide service and expertise to the program stores across the organization. Review market pricing across the category and establish recommended pricing strategies.
  • Research, determine and maintain optimal product mix for Planograms, i.e. core retail listings within portfolio.
  • Generate and monitor micro strategy data and disseminate information to pertinent staff.
  • Liaise with key departments to ensure all products and pricing arrangements are accurate.
  • Schedule and contribute to periodic business reviews with pertinent vendors to monitor and track performance to date.
  • Prepare and deliver business updates to senior management monthly.
  • Generate revenues for co-op advertising, including promotional flyers, proprietary magazines, special events Analyze AC Nielsen market data and home scan data to measure category trends to leverage opportunities
  • Review and interpret vendor sponsored market research information.
  • Develop and execute planograms as per schedule.
  • Constantly review and follow critical path schedules for promotional flyers and special event programs
  • Manage promotional activities for flyers, in-store promotions and special events, in accordance with set schedules.
  • Oversee editing of promotional flyers and make appropriate changes.
  • Negotiate vendor participation at annual retail events.

Administration / Miscellaneous
  • Oversee communications to participating stores on all functional issues including planogram changes.
  • Respond promptly and efficiently to all stakeholder inquires to address any issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

People Development
  • Provide leadership, coaching and development to direct reports.
  • Develop and coach support team to ensure job incumbent is ready to further develop into the next job level within 2-3 years.

Knowledge, skills and experience:
  • University Degree in relevant discipline
  • 2 years relevant department management experience
  • 5+ years’ experience managing relevant product category
  • Strong business acumen, ability to see big picture while juggling details
  • Exceptional problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication both written and verbal
  • Superior organizational skills
  • Strong leadership, coaching and mentoring skills
  • Excellent strategic planning and negotiation skills
  • Ability to effectively liaise with key stakeholders, staff and RBG/McKesson Senior Management, Tier 1 vendors
  • Financial analysis and planning skills

Context and Environment:
  • Supporting the National Director of Category Management, and working collectively with the Category Team to develop and implement category strategies that drive sales and profit growth.
  • The ability to perform in a fast paced, complex business while keeping all key stakeholders informed, including Senior Management.
  • Attention to detail and ability to successfully work on a number of different assignments at the same time are critical to achieving desired results.
  • All aspects of the job require a high degree of confidentiality.
