About This Career Opportunity

Black & McDonald’s Facilities Management & Operations team in BC is growing! If you are a hands-on, customer service-oriented, and technically-inclined professional searching for the opportunity to build a solid foundation for your career, this position is for you. The Building Operator/Plumber is located at Kelowna General Hospital in Kelowna, BC and reports directly to the Facility Manager.

Under specific direction, the FMO Building Operator/Plumber responds to tenant requests, performs preventive maintenance inspections, and minor repairs, to ensure continuing operation. This position involves a varying work schedule you may be asked to work a rotating 12 hour shift schedule on occasion (two days on, two nights on, four days off) as well as M-F with on call duties. This position will fulfill day to day tasks in a timely manner ensuring that the building operates safely and efficiently. The position also requires compliance with Black & McDonald codes of conduct, health, safety and environmental policies and safe work practices along with any client specific protocol.
  • Respond to tenant requests.
  • Perform shift tours and log readings
  • Perform preventative maintenance, cleaning, painting
  • Perform minor repairs including: faucets, sinks, clear toilets and drains, cleaning grease traps and sumps, replace lamps, reset breakers
  • Keeps all plumbing, HVAC systems and equipment in safe and proper working condition
  • Completes plumbing work such as:
    • Perform preventative maintenance work on all plumbing and HVAC related equipment
    • Troubleshoot equipment to locate & repair problems
    • Inspect, install, repair and replace pipes, fittings and plumbing fixtures to maintain the heating, domestic water, and medical gas
    • Maintain and overhaul and repair hot and cold water lines, sanitary and storm sewers and drainage systems
    • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications
    • Maintain overhaul and repair automatic temperature controls, cross connection devices, steam lines, traps, heat exchangers, and other related equipment
    • Completes plumbing work including new installations and alterations
  • Complete maintenance records and work orders
  • Observe and implement safety regulations and practices
  • Observe and implement applicable regulations made under the Provincial and Federal statues and Municipal by-laws
  • Ensure plumbing stocks are kept in a secure location and inventory levels are maintained and recorded
  • Maintain the cleanliness of all shops and mechanical rooms
  • Update documentation (drawings, specifications, O&M manuals valve tag charts, etc.) related to plumbing, medical gas, heating/cooling and steam services
  • Participate and support other duties as assigned to assist other maintenance trades
  • Startup/shut down major building equipment
  • Perform minor repairs and installations including:
    • Installation of wall and ceiling mounted accessories
    • Lamp/bulb replacements; replacing filters & belts
  • Perform other duties as assigned; including non-plumbing related duties

Education Requirements
  • Valid BC or Interprovincial Plumbing ticket
  • Valid back flow preventer/cross connection certification
  • 3rd class power engineering certificate would be an asset
Work Experience Requirements
  • Building operations experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge and/or experience in building automated systems and HVAC, plumbing systems

  • Must be able to pass RCMP Criminal Record Check
