Tri-County Regional Centre for Education

The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education encompasses the three counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving 5757 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

POSITION: African Nova Scotia Student Success Teacher


REPORTS TO: School Administrator


ROLE: This teacher will be working with African Nova Scotian students providing the students with both academic and social support. The teacher will liaise with the school and the African Nova Scotian community to better facilitate stronger communication between students, parents and staff of the school.


Qualifications:

  • This is an Employment Equity Position and the teacher must be of African Descent;
  • Valid NSTU Teacher Certification;
  • Proven ability to communicate and work alongside diverse cultural and racial backgrounds;
  • Demonstrated ability to value the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism;
  • Excellent classroom and student management skills;
  • Experience working with African Nova Scotia Students and families;
  • Knowledge and experience working with the African Nova Scotia community;
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of technologies used to enhance instruction and learning;
  • Knowledge and/or experience in implementing inclusive teaching and assessment strategies;
  • Completion of WHMIS and First Aid, or willingness to obtain upon hire.

Responsibilities/Tasks:

  • Teacher will liaise with school staff to assist parents to participate in the school program planning process.
  • Teacher will assist students, parents and liaise with school to understand school communication plans.
  • Teacher will assist students, parents and liaise with school staff to access school and board based supports.
  • Teacher will assist parents and liaise with appropriate staff in understanding Department of Education, Regional Education and School based policies that impact their children through the Provincial African NS REO.
  • Teacher will assist students and parents and liaise with school staff to develop individual education plans when appropriate.
  • Teacher will work with the Digby Education Committee and community to develop education system awareness skills.
  • Teacher will provide ongoing updates regarding African Nova Scotian achievement to the Digby Settlement Agreement’s Site Committee.
  • The successful applicant will work as part of the school team to help ensure success for African Nova Scotian students.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
