About the Opportunity

Currently, Blue Mountain Power Co-op is looking for a full-time Utility Tree Trimmer to join their team in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.

Reporting to the Field Operations Supervisor you will be responsible for removing trees and vegetation that could come into contact with power lines along right of ways. This position is also responsible to maintain the reliability of Blue Mountain Power Co-op’s (BMPC’s) electrical system, and ensuring the safety of the members, general public, and staff of BMPC.

It is essential that you work with strict adherence to safety practices, regulations, and procedures to remove trees and vegetation to maintain clearances on the electric distribution system, whether overhead or underground.

Your duties will also include, but are not limited to:

  • Attending and participating in health and safety meetings
  • Participating in the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) if required
  • Working in a team environment, promoting and applying safe work practices
  • Performing worksite inspections and observations in accordance with the HSEMS program
  • Regularly reviewing and identifying deficiencies, and recommending corrections
  • Ensuring compliance with internal Policies and Procedures, including OH&S Requirements
  • Observing, reporting, and rectifying incidents or substandard practices
  • Participating in investigations, including public line contacts, fires, and more
  • Conducting and participating in worksite hazard assessments
  • Providing leadership and mentoring for direct reports, promoting team building, and monitoring work performance
  • Addressing day-to-day operational issues, including equipment and tooling
  • Communicating with landowners to address concerns about work
  • Planning, conducting, and participating in regular inspections
  • Updating vegetation system status to relevant supervisors
  • Inspecting vehicles, equipment, and materials
  • Protecting the public from worksite hazards
  • Visually assessing each site for safety factors while also setting up road signs for public safety
  • Trimming, slashing, and removing vegetation around power lines
  • Operating required equipment (trim trucks, chippers, etc.)
  • Maintaining equipment and supplies in safe working order
  • Ensuring stocked and well-maintained company vehicles
  • Keeping the shop area clean and orderly
  • Performing other related duties, including snow removal, inventory stocking, and more as needed

About You

In order to qualify for this role, you will need to have at least 3 - 5 years min experience as a utility tree trimmer,a high school diploma or equivalent and a Utility Tree Trimmer Certification. You will also need to have a Driver’s License (Minimum Class 5 with Q Endorsement) and a clean driver’s abstract.

The following skills and experience are also required:

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with members, the general public and team members
  • Willingness to learn, participate and play a key role in the delivery of a successful vegetation management system
  • High level of communication skills (oral, written, interpersonal)
  • Proficient in preparing and completing reports, log-books, inspections, time records
  • Experience in administrative duties including, materials/inventory used, personal timesheets, tailboards, pre-trips, monthly truck inspections, and more
  • Able to work collaboratively with management, peers and staff of BMPC
  • Take initiative for own skills/training updates and development
  • Physical fitness/strength and stamina
  • Mental alertness, good coordination, manual dexterity, mechanical ability
  • Comfortable working at heights and in various weather conditions and have the ability to climb poles
  • Cognitive, and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to respond accordingly to environmental and weather factors
  • Knowledge of Interpreting area maps
  • Ability to respond to stressful and/or time-sensitive situations

Additionally, our ideal candidate enjoys being outdoors and surrounded by nature since fieldwork is conducted outdoors in all weather conditions and involves travel to rural parts of the county.
