Are you an energetic student looking to gain experience in arts and culture this summer? Join the team at the Varley Art Gallery to gain hands-on practice working with children between the ages 4 and 12. You’ll be playing outdoors, helping in in the studio and ensuring everyone has a safe and enjoyable time at art camp.

Your responsibilities

  • Assist in the delivery of camp activities including games, tours, and camp-wide projects in the gallery, art studios and outdoors
  • Prioritize child well-being, safety and protection throughout the camp(s). Evaluate situations for potential risks to the safety, protection and well-being of campers and staff, proactively taking mitigating actions to address such risks.
  • Maintain camp documentation, including registration information, attendance records, sign in and sign out procedures, permission forms, waiver forms, and timesheets.
  • Act as first point of contact for parents/guardians providing excellent customer service
  • Organize and facilitate games with campers during breaks; supervise children during lunch and snacks ensuring all health and safety policies and procedures are followed
  • Under the guidance of a Summer Camp Instructor, adapt art materials and activities to camper needs with regard to safety, hygiene, weather, breaks, etc. to ensure a high quality of programming for all campers
  • Attend all trainings and regular camp meetings
  • Demonstrate the confidence and ability to make decisions in the best interests of campers
  • Resolve problems and conflicts among camp participants effectively as they arise
  • Report all incidents promptly and thoroughly to the Summer Camp Director
  • Maintain studio cleanliness and organize art supplies
  • Other duties as required


Who can apply?

You are eligible to apply if you meet the criteria outlined below. You have:

  • A passion for fine arts; visual arts, arts administration, art history or early childhood education
  • Experience developing, and instructing art lessons to children; previous camp involvement an asset
  • The ability to adapt programming to meet the needs of individual participants
  • The desire to prioritize the health and safety of all participants, staff and volunteers
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills
  • The capacity to provide excellent customer service
  • A welcoming, and inclusive attitude
  • Legal permission to work in Canada, and a minimum of 16 years of age at the start of employment
  • A valid Standard First Aid with CPR level C
  • A HIGH FIVE Healthy Child Development certificate
  • A Clear Vulnerable Sector Screening


Mandatory training dates

  • Friday, June 16 (virtual)
  • Saturday, June 17 (Milliken Mills Community Centre)
  • Monday June 26 to 30 (Varley Art Gallery; Site specific training)
