NS Power’s Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) team develops, deploys and sustains asset-centric maintenance strategies and programs across Power Production and Customer Operations. Many of these programs are sustained through the work of the Asset Management Operations team.

Distribution Standards is one of the functions within the AM Operations team, accountable for continuous improvement and sustainment of the Distribution Standards Program. The Distribution Standards program has the over-arching requirement to provide pre-engineered designs, materials and methodologies for the installation of distribution assets across the province.

NS Power is looking for an Electrical Engineer to join the Standards team in the role of Standards Engineer, in this role the engineer will be responsible for all design aspects of creating and maintaining distribution design and material Standards for the company.

Accountabilities

You will be responsible for your personal safety, that of co-workers, and those under your direction by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. You will also hold safety paramount at all times, for self and others and ensure Safety Program requirements are being met in a timely manner, as defined for the AMO Operations and Capital Program team.

You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives and will support the achievement of objectives in the Environmental Management System (EMS) on an annual basis as assigned.

The Main Accountabilities Of The Position Include
  • Creation and updating of distribution design Standards for overhead (OH) and undergound (UG) systems. These documents are Engineered Drawings that are used by Planners and Power Line Technicians for the design and installation of the many assemblies that make up the NSPI distribution system.
  • Creation and updating of Standard Work Methods through collaboration with field-based personnel for both OH and UG systems.
  • Approval of Tools and Equipment used in the execution of work as defined in Standard Work Method(s).
  • Completion of Arc flash assessments, and incorporation of findings into Standards deliverables noted above.
  • OH and UG material specifications:
    • Specification and approval of materials for field installation as defined in Design Standards.
    • Procurement support, including support of the joint procurement initiative with New Brunswick Power, including bid evaluations and technical recommendations.
  • Support safety and asset performance driven investigations for distribution assets to determine root cause of failure and create actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Development and modification of Distribution Engineering Practices used by engineers throughout the organization that are involved in design and operation of the distribution system.
  • Keeping abreast of, and shaping industry standards via participation in standards organizations such as the Canadian Standards Association, Underwriter’s Laboratories of Canada and others. Ensuring changes are incorporated into Standards deliverables and communicated to NS Power Operations teams.
  • Keeping abreast of, and shaping industry best practices via participation in industry forums such as Canadian Electricity Association, National Electrical Energy Testing and Applications Research Center (NEETRAC). Using intelligence gathered to improve standards of all types.
  • Completion of field audits, and participation in Quality Assurance activities related to standards functions.
  • Engaging with Safe Work Practice, Personal Protective Equipment and other committees within NS Power to ensure they reflect and align with approved engineered design and materials.
  • Training and support for Engineers-in-Training, Planners and others with regards to the content and function of Standards.
  • Participation in Reliability Teams to provide distribution Standards input to distribution asset criticality and health assessment.
  • Support for strategic internal and external initiatives regulatory filings, and Customer reliability strategies.
  • Seek opportunity for continuous improvement for Standards and other asset management processes, to optimize use of resources while meeting or exceeding the needs of Customers.
Skills, Capabilities And Experience
  • The ideal candidate will possess an Electrical Engineering degree and will also be r egistered or eligible for registration with Engineers NS. Familiarity with distribution assets and system design, construction and/or operation are considered beneficial.
