Under the supervision of the Complex Coordinator, the Senior Safety Patrol Boat Operator is responsible for the development, operation, maintenance and administration of recreational services and facilities offered by Glenmore Reservoir Services. Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide City of Calgary bylaw education to boaters and report related infractions to Community Standards.
  • Safety patrol of Glenmore Reservoir: monitor all boating activities, boater education, perform emergency rescues and first aid response, and execute search and rescue procedures.
  • Delegate work assignments to Safety Patrol Boat Operators and provide orientations, coaching and feedback to employees, in consultation with a Shift Supervisor and/or Complex Coordinator.
  • Maintain and perform minor repairs on infrastructure and Glenmore Reservoir assets.
  • Complete inspection and maintenance checklists and ensure appropriate follow up.
  • Provide superior customer service to citizens and user groups; communicate with user groups/stakeholders to understand their requirements.
  • Manage registration and amenity bookings and assist in staff scheduling and filling of shifts.
  • Manage rental station including execution open/close procedures.
  • Participate and implement safety practices and training.
  • Other duties may be assigned by the Complex Coordinator and/or Shift Supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED) and at least 2 years of experience which includes 1 year of leadership experience in an aquatic environment and 1 year experience as a Lifeguard.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending is required.
  • Internal City of Calgary National Lifeguard (pool) recertification within the last 12 months and completed City of Calgary New Guard training is required.
  • Valid Pleasure Craft Operator certification is a requirement.
  • Current Standard First Aid from an approved Alberta Occupational Health and Safety provider is required.
  • CPR C and AED certified within the last 12 months from an approved Alberta Occupational Health and Safety provider is required.
  • Pool Operator certification (levels 1 and 2) or equivalent would be an asset.
  • Current Rescue Boat Fleet Permit (City of Calgary) and Rescue Craft Operator certification would be an asset.
  • Lifesaving Society Swift water Rescue certification or Lifesaving Society Boat Rescue for First Responder certification would be assets.
  • Transport Canada SVOP (Small Vessel Operator Proficiency) and MED3 (Marine Emergency Duty) certification would be an asset.
  • Must have leadership and supervisory skills, superior customer service, good judgement, and time management skills.
Working Conditions:Must be able to lift up to 22.7 kg (50 pounds) and work outdoors in a physically demanding environment in all types of weather.
Pre-employment Requirements
  • A security clearance will be conducted.
  • Selection process may include a behavioural based interview and skills testing.
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator’s permit

  • Lifesaving Society Verification Record and copies of alternative provider qualifications must be submitted with applications.

Pre-employment Drug Test:
An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
