About this opportunity:
Reporting to the Director, Strategic HR Partnerships, your primary responsibility will be to provide coaching and professional human resources advice to your assigned client groups, including members of the Cenovus Leadership Team and their direct reports. In addition, this role will be responsible for the coaching, mentorship, and development of a team of Strategic HR Business Partners (SHRBPs) who will report directly into this role. The role works with the HR Centers of Excellence (COEs) to deliver programs and services to the business in alignment with the business and people strategy and plans, while being a key contributor to strategic projects across your assigned client groups. In addition, this role is a member of the extended Human Resources Leadership Team.

Responsibilities:
  • Strategic Planning
    • Act as a strategic partner to the Executive and Senior leaders and their function heads in planning for the people components of the business strategy such as organizational capacity, capability, people experience, and risk that will drive high performance of the business area and ultimately the Company. In alignment with the Company and Business area Strategy and Plan, conduct a “people” SWOT analysis and develop the people plan
    • Influence the Company strategy and business and people plan to ensure they reflect the requirements of the client group
    • Partner with the leadership team to identify the most effective organization structure, role charters and resources to ensure optimal business results
    • Monitor internal and external people trends that may impact the business area’s ability to deliver on its strategy and plan
    • Monitor business performance, diagnose organization issues, identify interventions and work with leaders to facilitate improvement and change
    • Execute the Cenovus and business area People plan to advance business performance
    • Develop and execute special HR projects to close gaps identified in the business area’s organization capacity, capability, and people experience. Work closely with COEs to ensure function programs are consistent with the People Plan, People Principles and are executed efficiently and effectively, tapping into resources and capability within the HR Department
    • Lead and facilitate an integrated approach to employee development, talent reviews, succession planning and internal development and mobility to enable leaders to meet current and future performance requirements
    • Provide change management consulting to support the successful execution of changes to organization, work, people, etc.
  • Deliver Client service
    • Gather feedback from clients regularly to ensure planning, projects, services and support being provided aligns to business area needs
    • Provide advice on organization design, organizational and team effectiveness, workforce planning, talent development, succession planning, attrition and retention
    • Support the execution of annual HR Programs such as leadership development, succession planning, employee development, performance management, mentoring, and compensation
    • Collaborate with the People Service Centre to ensure consistent and quality delivery of services to clients (recruitment, employee changes, etc)
    • Ensure an accurate representation of the Workforce, through capturing current and forecasted headcount in collaboration with the Workforce Planning Analyst
    • Partner with Corporate Planning as it relates to Workforce Planning and Budget
  • Manage risk
    • Provide advice and consultation to management and employees on performance and conduct
    • Report and address employee concerns in accordance with Company policies
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Influence and support the development and delivery of fit for purpose governance, programs, processes and services within the COEs and service delivery teams of the HR Department
    • Represent the business area’s needs in HR program development and planning and continuous improvement; provide COEs with input that reflects the perspective of client group and results in fit for purpose programs and services
Qualifications:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be able to travel across Canada and the United States
  • Post-secondary degree in HR or a business-related field
  • Minimum 15+ years’ experience with significant experience demonstrating all or most of the technical HR Capabilities below or in combination with other business experience.
  • Minimum of 10+ year’s of leadership experience (must be able to demonstrate prior experience of formal leadership)
  • HR designation or equivalent is an asset
  • Experience working in the Oil and Gas Industry is an asset
  • Experience with asset acquisitions is an asset (due diligence, execution, integration
    • Business Acumen – understand the business operations, functional and external environment and apply business tools and analysis that inform HR initiatives and operations consistent with overall strategic direction. Human Resource experience with emphasis on labor relations, employment, law, compensation and benefits.
    • Working knowledge of employment law and Cenovus’s policies, procedures, benefit plans, compensation, payroll, training, employee relations, employment and affirmative action.
    • Leadership and Organizational navigation – to navigate the organization and accomplish HR goals to create a compelling vision and mission for the function’s HR that aligns with the strategic direction and culture of the Company. To lead and promote change, manage implementation of HR initiatives and promote the role as a key business partner. Leading progressive larger teams in a fast-paced environment.
    • Integrity –maintain high levels of personal and professional integrity and act as an ethical agent promoting core values, integrity and accountability of the Company.
    • Relationship Management – create and maintain a network of professional contacts within and outside the function, HR Department and Company to work as an effective member of the team
    • Communication – craft and deliver concise informative verbal or written communications, listen to and address concerns and transfer, translate or influence from one level or team of the organization to another. Strong client focus, demonstrated success with quickly learning a client business, building relationships and getting results the client sees as valuable
    • Collaboration and Consultation – work with stakeholders in evaluating business challenges and identifying opportunities for the design, implementation and evaluation of organizational interventions and build support for solutions. Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team
    • Critical thinking – collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data, interpret and promote findings that inform business decisions
