The Opportunity

This primary responsibility of this full-time position is to support the Quality Assurance team to ensure compliance of Tantalus Labs processes and products with internal and external regulations and standards.

The position is located at the “SunLab” production facility in Maple Ridge, BC. The role is within a quality assurance team of four and reports to the Chief Science Officer. This role also takes direction from the Quality Assurance Manager. This is an entry-level position for a keen individual seeking to gain experience in the discipline of quality management.

The Quality Control Specialist works in a fast-paced environment that requires careful attention to detail while maintaining a positive and enthusiastic attitude. The role requires the ability to adapt quickly to changes that apply to the industry such as legislation and regulation amendments, internal practices, internal department specializations, and technical training.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Take a leadership role in designing and implementing Tantalus Labs’s risk-based production quality control practices
  • Oversee and conduct internal audits (2 to 3 per month)
    • create the internal audit plan
    • conduct internal audits as per the audit schedule
    • record deviations in the quality management software
    • report deviations to the Chief Science Officer and Operations leaders
    • work with Operations leaders to investigate deviation reports, document corrective and preventive actions, and record efficacies of these actions
  • Conduct and document daily production quality checks and advise the Chief Science Officer and Operations leaders on production status
  • Conduct and document quality checks on incoming supplies to the production facility
  • Carry out lab sample collections/submissions to external labs, moisture content analyses, dried flower potency analyses, and other testing required for change control management
  • Manage the company’s relationship with external lab service providers and associated documents, including chains of custody and certificates of analysis
  • Update product potency data for recreational and medical sales as needed and report these data internally
  • Troubleshoot issues with the quality management software and inventory tracking software providers as needed
  • Participate in external audits including Health Canada inspections

Qualifications
  • B.Sc. or graduate degree in Horticulture, Plant Biology, Biochemistry, Food Science, or related discipline including coursework in chemistry or biochemistry
  • 2+ years experience in a Quality Control role preferably in cannabis or other consumer packaged goods sector
  • Familiarity with regulations and guidelines governing consumer packaged goods sector, e.g. Cannabis Regulations, NHP Regulations, Good Production Practices, HACCP
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities in chemistry or biochemistry including an ability to assess validated lab methods and interpret lab report data
  • Demonstrated experience with processing product returns, customer complaints, and product recalls or mock recalls
  • Experience with external audits preferred
  • Organizational, administrative, and communication skills
Working Conditions
  • Regular hours: M-F 8:30 am to 5:00 pm; infrequent evening and weekend communications as needed
  • Hygienic attire to be worn during work hours in production, packaging, shipping, and storage areas as per the employee hygiene policy
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration with Operations, Marketing, and IT
