The Office of Institutional Research and Analysis provides leadership, advice and support for planning, policy formation and informed decision-making activities at McMaster University. To fulfill its mission and support the strategic goals of McMaster University, the office provides accurate, timely and high-quality information, data analysis and analytics to the university’s various academic and administrative offices and responds to data requests from external agencies. It supports, advises, and enables
senior administration planning and decision making through the provision of performance metrics, benchmarks, projections, simulations, modelling, and effective analyses and insights based on a thorough understanding of McMaster and its external environment. Employees within Institutional Research and Analysis serve as the liaison with government, the U15 Data Exchange, Council of Ontario Universities, and other external agencies on institutional data and research activities.


Job Description


JOB SUMMARY:

Provides administrative support to a project, conference or event, under directed guidance from the Principal Investigator and/or the Research Coordinator. The student will be responsible for identifying whether a course contains the specified types of EL and the intensity of each type of EL, in consultation with course instructors and/or program chairs, from participating Faculties and programs. One key deliverable is a compilation of all McMaster courses tagged as EL or not with an intensity indicator, as well as an inventory of the types of EL and the intensity within each course. The student will also be required to review course outlines in order to assemble the relevant data, assist in the compilation of the data for the final report, and provide feedback and recommendations on the process. Other projects may involve reporting to ranking agencies, ad-hoc projects from various sources or the cleaning and updating of spreadsheets or databases.


ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Update records by entering data into spreadsheets or databases.
2. Conduct course outline, database, literature, library and web searches to fulfill the task requirements
3. Compose email communications for a specific project, conference or event.
4. Copy, collate and assemble a variety of documents and packages.
5. Collect, maintain and organize hardcopy and/or electronic records/files.
6. Meet and follow-up with course instructors and/or program chairs to verify EL tagging and intensity.
7. Exercise good judgement on whether to escalate an issue to the attention of the Principal Investigator and/or Research Coordinator.
8. Answer routine inquiries and follow-up regarding a specific project, conference or event.
9. Collect, maintain and organize qualitative and quantitative data from a variety of sources.
10. Format, word process, edit, and proofread a variety of documents and materials.
11. Perform other clerical duties of a similar nature, specific to a project, conference or event.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Enrolled in 4th year or higher of, or just graduated with a bachelor’s degree program as a minimum.
Experience: Previous co-op or experiential learning experience preferred.


  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to work with diverse groups of people
  • Superior organizational skills and ability to work to set timelines
  • Prior experience coordinating activities or managing projects
  • Knowledge of experiential learning and/or prior participation in curricular experiential learning activities and/or participation in community engagement activities
  • Self-directed and motivated worker with ability to work independently
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Excel
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent people skills
  • Knowledge of text analysis/machine learning would be helpful.

Vaccination Policy Statement


The University is committed to providing and maintaining healthy and safe working and learning environments for all workers, students, volunteers and visitors.
