Job Description

The Prep Artist completes Roto or Paint tasks, using various techniques and software to erase certain objects visible in the original images. Working closely with Compositing Artists, they assist them in the integration of elements that go into the composition of visual effects shots, ensuring to meet the high quality standards of Rodeo FX.

Responsibilities:

• Use paint and compositing techniques in Nuke to produce clean plates, remove rigs or other artifacts, etc. This may involve generating pre-comps for use by Compositors, or may require taking shots to completion;
• Create rotoscoping masks for digital image compositors and understand their use in the compositing process;
• Remove and restore grain from images before they are routed to another department;
• Use expressions in Nuke to facilitate digital painting;
• Have a good understanding of the 3D environment in Nuke, and be able to use geodata to do projections;
• Work closely with the Prep Leads, Compositing Leads and Compositing Supervisor to find creative and technical solutions and approaches that enhance shots, while meeting project specifications and deadlines;
• May participate in the development of tools and techniques for the department;
• Perform quality control on shots before they are submitted for review/approval, ensuring all technical and creative standards are met, and promptly apply notes received;
• Keep Production and the project team informed of the status of work, issues to be resolved, ramifications of problems encountered and recommend potential solutions;
• Ensure deadlines are met, advising the project team promptly if delays could be expected.

Qualifications

• Experience in a similar position or demonstrated practical knowledge/interest in VFX;
• General knowledge of the steps of a visual effects production and the numeric image composition;
• Experience with Nuke software;
• Knowledge of image composition and colour;
• Sense of prioritization and respect of deadlines.
