Duties

Under the supervision of the research scientist, the student will conduct scientific experiments and other laboratory work, analyze data, write reports and manuscripts, and write a thesis including scientific research background, methodology, results obtained, and discussion. As part of the research project, duties may include, but are not limited to, bioinformatics, whole bacterial genome and microbial community sequencing analyses, and bacterial growth assays.

Work environment

The research lab is located at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Lethbridge Research and Development Centre in Lethbridge, Alberta. The student will be working with and trained by a team of microbiology researchers and experts in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry and carbohydrate chemistry. The focus of this research team is to understand host-microbe interactions, and how microbes interact with and modify carbohydrates in livestock. The student will be training under the research scientist, research assistants, and facility managers.

Education:
Currently enrolled or will be enrolled by the date of appointment in a Master’s or PhD program at the University of Lethbridge with specialization in: Biochemistry or related discipline, such as molecular biology, microbiology, or microbial ecology.

Note: Must be currently recognized as having full-time student status in the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled, pending approval of acceptance or in the process of submitting your application. Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start date and the student must be returning to full-time studies for your next academic term.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience* in conducting scientific experiments in biochemistry or microbiology.
Experience* in reading and writing scientific reports and articles.

  • In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.
