VMware Tanzu Greenplum Query Processing R&D group is focussed to make a lasting impact on our enterprise-grade database offerings for VMware Tanzu Greenplum. Query Processing sits at the core of VMware Tanzu Greenplum Database, and enables customers to efficiently scale and process petabytes of data. Our team has developed ORCA from scratch which is a modern top-down query optimizer based on cascades optimization framework and sits along with legacy postgres planner in Greenplum providing enhanced query optimization capabilities.

We are bringing new and enhanced query optimization capabilities to the market and are looking for engineers with strong technical leadership to be part of a world class database query optimization team, participating in the design and development of a next generation features inside query optimization engine for the Massively Parallel Processing shared nothing open source database.

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

• You have become immersed in the team’s day to day operations, you are advising junior engineers on how to advance technical workstreams.
• You have become familiar with the team’s technical domain and have begun using that knowledge to advise and influence cross-team collaborations.
• You have reviewed the team’s code base and have started a process of code reviews
• You have reviewed and influenced the team’s architecture/design artifacts and decisions
• You will lead the team in packaging the tools they built for production
• You will lead the team in troubleshooting and mitigating high severity issues in production.
  
  

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

In this role, you will become a technical subject matter expert for Query Processing team.

• You will bring innovative ideas to complex technical query processing solutions and write code primarily using C++ and C language, and often use Shell scripting, Python or GoLang to interact amongst different products under the VMware Tanzu Greenplum portfolio.
• You will bring best development and testing practices to deliver an enterprise product.
• You will bring in systems programming skills including distributed concurrency control, transaction management, fault tolerance in distributed systems, multi-threading, memory modeling, etc to deliver high quality features
• You will collaborate with other Greenplum Open Source Community members on technical solutions or discussions.
• Provide technical guidance as we solicit product feedback from customers. Ensure what we’re building meets the expectations of reliability, scaling, and security.
• Mentor team members at different stages in their technical career. Support the team in breaking down complex stories into development tasks. Conduct code reviews, participate or lead technical context sharing discussions.
• Collaborate with management, other engineers on the team and across the VMware Tanzu Greenplum Portfolio to achieve planned targets. You will additionally work with other functions such as program management, quality and support engineers to improve the product.
  
  

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Bhuvnesh Chaudhary, Engineering Manager for the Greenplum Query Processing R&D group. Bhuvnesh joined VMware in January 2020 as part of acquisition of Pivotal Software where he was employed since 2013 and working on Greenplum. Prior to engineering manager, Bhuvnesh has worked an engineer in several domains of Greenplum, including query optimization, execution, federated query processing (accessing external data stores like S3, Hive, HBase, HDFS etc from Greenplum), catalog and storage, cluster management and upgrade.

We work as a distributed team with colleagues in Beijing, the United States and India. Each team comprises Engineers, a Product Manager and an Engineering Manager. We value collaboration and start our days with daily stand ups where decisions are made to pair or work solo. Members often schedule knowledge sharing or technical review sessions on a regular basis. It is also important to us to make time to check in on the team’s overall well-being, this is done by having retro sessions to review the past week’s events, regular 1:1s with your engineering manager and periodic team health checks.
