Job Summary:

Working under the direction of the Superintendent, Mechanical Maintenance, the Mechanical Engineer is responsible for improving the reliability of the plant through the application of engineering knowledge and advanced maintenance methods. The incumbent will manage rotating equipment, new installations, project and provides technical guidance to both the Maintenance and Operations departments being the front line of defect detection and elimination.

Technical Ability/Problem Solving

  • Leads the process of defect detection and elimination on critical machinery, including turbines, compressors, pumps, gearing, fans and motors.
  • Monitors the condition of critical machinery in the plant through the use of continuous and offline vibration monitoring equipment, oil analysis results, process data, and performance surveys. Conducts further audits and information gathering as required.
  • Applies analytical skills and scientific methods in identifying the true causes of problems.
  • Works with maintenance planners and supervisors in organizing repairs identified through the above methods.
  • Completes technical calculations as needed for equipment selection and improvement.
  • Monitors the Bently Nevada System1 data acquisition system.
  • Provides onsite vibration analysis of routine problems. Employs outside vendors and experts for more complex problems.
  • Leads the process of root cause failure analysis and root cause elimination.

Productivity & Adaptability

  • Manages a large number of competing priorities. Brings priority conflicts to the attention of the Superintendent, Mechanical Maintenance.
  • Takes on assignments outside of his/her personal areas of expertise.
  • Fills-in for the Superintendent, Mechanical Maintenance during absences.
  • Recognizes and eliminates safety hazards in the workplace.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of process hazard analysis, process safety, and management of change systems.

Communication, Co-ordination & Reporting

  • Assists maintenance supervisors with prioritizing and scheduling work.
  • Maintains a continuing liaison with Production and Maintenance personnel who share responsibility for the function of these areas
  • Meets regularly with the Superintendent, Mechanical Maintenance to present the results of studies and proposals, and the status of work in progress.
  • Works closely with tradespeople to identify and troubleshoot equipment problems.
  • Creates written procedures and “best practices” for specialized maintenance work.
  • Provides technical direction to maintenance planners in developing repair plans.
  • Provides technical support to maintenance supervisors and tradespeople.
  • Liaises with vendors, operators, and maintenance and engineering personnel in order to obtain information necessary for troubleshooting and/or repair planning.

Self/Staff Development

  • Maintains ongoing familiarization with all procedures, equipment and processes.
  • Develops their knowledge of machinery, becoming an expert in this area.
  • Develops their knowledge of vibration analysis, oil analysis, and condition monitoring.
  • Develops working familiarity of ASME and API codes, and Alberta regulations.
  • Focuses on precision maintenance, with the goal of making equipment “better than new”.
  • Directly supervises maintenance and contract employees during outages and special events. This will occasionally involve working nightshift for up to eight weeks per year.

Other

  • Monitors and assesses the preventive maintenance program and makes adjustments as required to improve reliability.
  • Prepares and executes maintenance projects. Monitors cost and progress, reporting any problems to the Superintendent, Mechanical Maintenance.
  • Identifies future reliability improvement projects and recommends them for budgetary considerations.
  • Understands and complies with established departmental processes and procedures.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Professional Engineer, with experience in within maintenance or engineering. Industrial Plant setting is an asset. Background in machinery reliability an asset. Has or is working towards obtaining professional status with APEGA.
