Role impact:
The Manager, Climate & Energy (Decarbonization) will execute key strategic activities and lead efforts to establish and sustain company-wide greenhouse gas mitigation, climate resilience, and energy conservation plans. The successful candidate will collaborate with CF’s Investment, Development, and Operations groups, and key external stakeholders to advance CF’s key climate action priority areas. This will include evaluating and enhancing CF portfolio’s climate resilience, managing, and leading efforts in accounting for CF’s carbon footprint, and developing and sustaining programs to protect valuable natural resources.

What you will deliver:

  • Provide subject matter expertise and build organizational capacity about low carbon and sustainable development for the design and construction of new buildings.
  • Partner with Investment colleagues to provide technical expertise and guidance in investments discussions for new and existing portfolio acquisitions as it relates to climate action and climate resilience.
  • Manage and execute net zero assessments for existing buildings and develop property level net zero and carbon transition strategies including renewable energy procurements
  • Develop and assist in execution of small and large scaled energy and carbon reduction measures, projects and programs, including development of business cases that meet the CF’s financial and climate action goals
  • Perform market analysis, lead feasibility evaluation, and pursue external carbon related certifications or programs, such as CaGBC Zero Carbon Certification, Walk Score, RELi.
  • Work with the sustainability team in the data collection and reporting of KPIs and progress towards the company’s climate goals, in researching, benchmarking, and identifying emerging carbon related trends and reporting frameworks
  • Perform climate risk evaluation and generate property risk profiles and action plans.
  • Collect databases of best practices and industry benchmarks.
  • Identify client expectations, local and international framework and regulations, to inform and highlight business impact.
  • Engage in consultative and collaborative discussion with internal and external stakeholders, including senior leadership team members in the organization, tenant’s corporate responsibility / sustainability leader, property team members, etc. on topics related to climate action and resilience
  • Engage in partnerships with key tenants, community stakeholders, and other private sector partners to share knowledge, and implement strategic climate mitigation goals.
  • Develop processes to enhance carbon accounting across for the corporation, including considerations for embodied carbon, scope 3 and previously excluded emissions.
  • Manage the execution of CF’s climate action and climate resilience plans by leading the development of projects and programs

  • High proficiency in office-computer applications (i.e. Microsoft Excel, Word, Visio, Project and PowerPoint)
  • Bilingual (French and English) considered an asset

What you need to succeed:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a relevant field of study (e.g., Building Science, Engineering, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, Architectural Science, Environmental Science, Sustainability Management, etc.)
  • 5 or more years of experience in the sustainability/energy/carbon consulting, sustainable/impact investment, and/or green infrastructure sectors. Progressive experience in the commercial real estate field is considered a strong asset.
  • Subject matter expertise in sustainability, including climate change, GHG emissions, carbon offsets.
  • Previous design, construction, or project management experience on new construction or major renovation projects with important sustainability, and energy efficiency objectives such as LEED and Zero Carbon building standard an asset.
  • Knowledge on industry best practices / certifications such as RELi, WELL, TRUE Zero Waste is considered an asset.
