Your Opportunity

The Ecosystems Team has an opportunity for an Intermediate Ecologist in one of our southern Ontario offices. The successful candidate will join our team of aquatic and terrestrial biologists who value teamwork and enjoy working in an environment with diverse and dynamic projects.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Primary Project Coordination tasks, working under the supervision of Project Managers:
  • Manage, plan (i.e., develop scope and budget) and oversee ecological programs, such as baseline studies, impact assessments and species at risk assessments
  • Manage tasks and projects according to approved scopes of work, and deliver quality reports on schedule and within budget
  • Maintain and develop client and regulatory relationships
  • Provide understanding of project goals and sound environmental project advice to external clients and internal Stantec contacts
  • Manage project budgets
  • Prepare work plans and budgets
  • Embrace and promote Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work
  • Primary Ecology tasks:
  • Prepare reports, including natural heritage input to a variety of planning projects such as environmental impact studies and terrestrial discipline reports for environmental assessments
  • Conduct background reviews for natural heritage information
  • Coordinate and implement industry standard protocols, including inventory and assessment of (depending on skill set):
  • Wildlife and wildlife habitat
  • Flora and vegetation communities
  • Aquatic habitat
  • Fish, benthic macroinvertebrates, sediment and water quality
  • Species at risk and other species of conservation concern
  • Effectiveness of construction phase mitigation efforts for species at risk or other sensitive species or features in Ontario
  • Enter, compile, and analyze field data
  • Evaluate the significance of known natural heritage features, including application of relevant policy and natural heritage guidance documents to a variety of projects
  • Identify constraints to construction and mitigation and approval requirements
  • Prepare applications for authorization under the Species at Risk Act, 2002, and the Endangered Species Act, 2007
  • Occasionally travel for work
  • Support operations of the ecosystems team through a variety of administrative tasks
  • Participate in Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work
Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Knowledge of current provincial and federal government regulatory requirements, including experience with various regulators such as Environment and Climate Change Canada, Ministry of the Environment Conservation and Parks, Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry, Conservation Authorities and municipalities
  • Experience planning, coordinating and implementing ecological field programs
  • Experience managing budgets and invoicing clients, or identify these skills as career development priorities
  • Proven technical communication, writing and organization skills, including demonstrated experience preparing technical reports
  • Strong organization skills
  • Able to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment
  • Self-motivated and thrives in an environment with diverse and dynamic projects
  • Valid driver’s licence
The Following Would Be Considered Assets
  • Previous environmental consulting experience
  • Previous experience conducting surveys for species at risk in Ontario
  • Previous experience supporting environmental assessments and permitting
  • Certification or experience applying Ecological Land Classification in Ontario
  • Certification or experience applying the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System
Education And Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in Biology or technical diploma in a related field is required as a minimum

Minimum of 5 years of experience in a related field in Ontario
