Auto req ID: 287112BR Position Title: Engineering Specialist III Position Type: Full time Employee Type: Exempt Job Summary Applies various engineering concepts, practices, and procedures to analyze operational data/methods, identify performance improvement opportunities, and/or implement technology systems that meet business objectives. Detailed summary in the areas of: FACILITIES & MATERIAL HANDLING ENGINEERING: Designs and supports the development of sites, buildings, offices, material handling systems, and sortation equipment for manuals and less complex automated sort facilities. Supports and collaborates with vendors and field maintenance departments on preventative maintenance efforts for material handling and automated sortation equipment. FACILITIES & MATERIAL HANDLING PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Plans, directs, controls, and implements engineering, construction, and start-up of FedEx Ground sortation facilities and complex material handling systems. INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER & PROCESS: Provides analysis, reporting tools, and engineering support for FedEx field operations to effectively control and/or justify operational costs. Recommends and supports management on development of more effective metrics and tools. OPERATIONS RESEARCH, PLANNING & ANALYSIS: Applies optimization, simulation, mathematical, statistical and data analytic techniques to research and develop tactical and strategic decision support system simulation models and solutions to improve company performance, process, and network solutions. OPERATIONS TECHNOLOGY: Researches, designs, develops, deploys, and/or supports new and current technology solutions to improve performance and reduce operating costs with minimal management guidance and support. Leads and participates on cross-functional project teams responsible for implementing new technology. OPERATIONS TECHNOLOGY SECURITY ENGINEER: Provides security of all OT devices in the FedEx Ground Network. Interfaces with IT, InfoSec, and Network Services on all OT Security initiatives. CRITICAL SYSTEMS SUPPORT: Researches, designs, develops, deploys, and/or supports new and current technology solutions to improve performance and reduce operating costs with management guidance and support. Participates on cross-functional project teams responsible for implementing new technologies and processes. Essential Functions
  • Analyzes performance data within engineering.
  • Analyzes and documents existing processes. Identifies opportunities for improvement and recommends solutions to management.
  • Researches and analyzes technical or engineering related information independently. Presents improvement recommendations to management.
  • Prepares accurate expenditure proposals and/or cost justification analysis independently. Monitors expenditures to ensure spending is applied and within budget guidelines.
  • Formulates and presents document research, progress, and results to team members, internal customers, and senior management.
  • Applies project management fundamentals and concepts. Creates and publishes progress reports, meeting minutes, field communication memos, and presentations for management review.
  • Participates in Control Self Monitoring (CSM) and/or Business Control Self-Assessment (BCSA) process within area of responsibility.
  • Mentors and develops critical skill sets in lower level engineers. Additional Essential Functions in the areas of: FACILITIES & MATERIAL HANDLING ENGINEERING:
  • Leads cross functional projects to develop more efficient material handling systems and facilities.
  • Develops architecture, layout, and site designs of the large scale facilities and hubs. FACILITIES & MATERIAL HANDLING PROJECT MANAGEMENT:
  • Leads cross-functional teams consisting of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Supports facility start-up, training, and project close-out activities.
  • Applies internal and external knowledge of specifications, plans, operations, and project management techniques. INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER & PROCESS:
  • Leads cross functional and/or cross operating company projects to perform root cause analysis on field metrics to enhance cost effectiveness in the field.
  • Analyzes reports and data pertaining to field engineering performance (e.g., service performance, package quality, damage reduction, service performance, damage and loss claims).
  • Monitors reports on field engineering performance and identifies variances and trends.
  • Participates in the identification, creation, and documentation of business and/or technical requirements.
  • Collaborates with IT, Field management, PGH departments, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance to policies and procedures. OPERATIONS RESEARCH, PLANNING & ANALYSIS:
  • Researches, designs, and develops tactical and strategic applications to support field operations.
  • Designs, develops, and maintains strategic network planning models to aid in long-term capacity planning process and short-term capacity shortfalls.
  • Conducts ad-hoc modeling requests by management. Quantifies operational impact of new business rules, operational policies, new initiatives/products to support decision-making process. CRITICAL SYSTEMS SUPPORT:
  • Develops a thorough knowledge of business processes.
  • Leads cross functional and/or cross operating company project teams responsible for implementing technology with support from management.
  • Researches new technologies.
  • Acts as a lead with suppliers’ technical and sales contacts. Understands purchasing cycle and requirements for orders and invoices. Creates Request for Proposals (RFP), receives responses, and reviews recommendations with management.
  • Performs proof-of-concept and pilot tests
  • Monitors and evaluates existing technology, processes and training materials for improvement opportunities to support technology life cycle
  • Attends relevant conference/seminars to remain current on new and upcoming technology and training tools
  • Supports systems and collaborates with field station operations, district staff, various Pittsburgh General Headquarters (PGH) departments, FedEx Services, and Information Technology (IT) to ensure all operational processes and applications are properly supported.
  • Develops reporting/metrics and training programs Minimum Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical or quantitative degree (e.g. mathematics) required; in addition to Minimum Experience, high school diploma or GED and four (4) years experience in applicable technical area is accepted in lieu of degree. Preferred disciplines may be needed in the areas of: FACILITIES & MATERIAL HANDLING PROJECT MANAGEMENT:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred; Master’s degree Engineering or Business Administration preferred. INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER & PROCESS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Logistics, or related field preferred; Master’s degree in Engineering or Business Administration preferred. OPERATIONS RESEARCH, PLANNING & ANALYSIS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering or related field preferred; Master’s degree in Engineering or Business Administration preferred. OPERATIONS TECHNOLOGY:

  • Experience with simulation software (e.g., Arena, AutoMod, Simio), programming language (e.g., Visual Basic, C+, Java), statistical software (e.g. SAS), data mining, mapping software (e.g. GIS), and optimization model preferred.
