The Opportunity:

Canadian Natural is looking for an Instrumentation Engineer that will provide technical expertise for the design, installation and maintenance of Instrumentation & Control Systems for Albian Bitumen Production. This position is Calgary based with regular and frequent visits to Albian site and could become site based in future, depending on business requirements. You will Provide Instrumentation specification, design/installation drawings and assist with commissioning/maintenance support for plant MOCs as well as sustaining capital and major project work. Develop engineering/construction work packages and authenticate.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Take ownership to improve the reliability of field instrumentation and be accountable from concept to commissioning for an expedited completion
  • Provide hands-on knowledge to resolve application issues for Flow / Level / Pressure / Temperature instrumentation, Product Analyzers, Nuclear Instruments, Control and on/off valves etc. - specifically the ones typically used in oil sands processes
  • Provide design and troubleshooting support for Fire and Gas systems
  • Ensure that all Codes, Canadian Natural applicable standards, best practices, specifications and regulations are met
  • Assist in troubleshooting of field Instrumentation. Provide assistance for Instrumentation & Control issues to the Maintenance, Sustaining Capital and Project Groups
  • Implement Management of Change initiatives and develop scope of work for execution
  • Develop efficient and effective alternative plans, jointly with maintenance personnel, to comply with demands for low cost and timely repair/modifications of process equipment

  • Job location: Albian Oil Sands - Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • Company sponsored Fly-In/Fly-Out from Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta
  • Shift schedule: 7x7 - 7 days on, 7 days off
  • This is a safety sensitive position
  • Eligible for relocation to Calgary or Edmonton or Fort McMurray

Skills & Qualifications:

  • 5 years+ of progressive experience in a large Industrial Plant with a Bachelor Degree in relevant engineering discipline is required
  • Registration with APEGA as P. Eng. is required. Candidates with strong technical background, eligible for registration with APEGA could also be considered
  • Experience with sizing and selection of field instrumentation, control valves, design and troubleshooting of Fire and Gas detection systems as well as codes and standards governing FGS systems
  • Experience with Foundation Fieldbus, Modbus and DeviceNet experience is an asset and experience with SPI (Intools), particularly datasheet and wiring
  • Knowledge of Safety instrumentation as well as regulatory instrumentation employed in oil sands
  • Experience with MAXIMO would be preferred as well as experience with Rockwell PLC and Foxboro/Honeywell DCS systems would be an asset, although not mandatory
