Ecological Management Specialist - ENV002056
Employment Type: SGEU Term 9 months or more
Location(s): SK-North Central-Prince Albert
Ministry: 026 Environment
Salary Range: $36.698 - $45.986 Hourly

The Ministry of Environment takes a team-based approach to protecting Saskatchewan’s environment for the wellbeing of the province, its people and its future. We use science-based solutions and environmental laws to help safeguard communities, and to protect our air, land, water and habitat. We are committed to high citizen and client satisfaction through workplace excellence, continuous improvement and innovation.

Fish, Wildlife and Lands Branch of the Ministry of Environment is seeking a highly-motivated, independent individual to work within the Lands Unit. The preferred location would be Prince Albert. The position would be part of a provincial team that is responsible for leading the Ministry’s response to the complex and growing demands associated with oil and gas exploration, mineral exploration, linear disturbance and requests for Crown resource land usage and development, such as peat harvesting, commercial opportunities, wild rice or resource use cabins.

The position will report to the Team Lead North of the Lands Unit, and the successful candidate will lead delivery of a wide variety of ecological protection programs and requests for Crown resource lands.

The responsibilities of the position include: completing environmental review of proposed projects, performing environmental inspections to ensure compliance with approval conditions and compliance with provincial legislation, ensuring the province’s obligations regarding Duty to Consult are assessed and fulfilled, initiating corrective/enforcement action where problems are identified, evaluating reclamation, mitigation and construction practices to ensure appropriate results are obtained. These reviews will be for projects submitted on both privately owned and publically administered Crown lands.

The position serves as a primary contact within the administrative areas for the petroleum, natural gas and mineral exploration industries which include individual companies, consultants, industry associations, First Nations or Métis people, and other government ministries, individuals and interest groups. The position requires an energetic, knowledgeable individual with the demonstrated ability to establish successful working relationships with various internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate must thrive in a high workload volume atmosphere.

This position also serves as the primary contact for the administrative district for requests to use, purchase or lease Crown resource lands. Requests of this nature are often polarized and the successful candidate will require the ability to mediate and/or lead meetings with multiple users, stakeholders and government ministries.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a thorough knowledge and understanding of the principles of integrated resource management and ecological protection. You will have knowledge of the industry/scientific terminology, principles and applied methodologies related to petroleum, natural gas or mineral exploration, coupled with knowledge of the applicable legislation and knowledge of the processes for reviewing, approving and monitoring these industries. You must also have knowledge of general agricultural practices, Information Service Corporation (ISC), the Dominion Land Survey and recreation land use requirements.

Typically, knowledge for this position is gained through a degree or diploma in natural sciences or integrated resource management, or other related degrees, supplemented by a minimum of five years of related experience in environmental/ecological program delivery within the oil and gas industry and Crown land management, as well as recent experience regulating ecological/environmental impacts associated with oil and gas exploration, mineral exploration or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

This position may require a significant percentage of your time for completing field work and inspections while traveling throughout your assigned district within Saskatchewan.

We are committed to workplace diversity.
