Position Summary:

The Diet Technician/Food Service Supervisor has responsibilities that encompass both completing tasks and patient assignments within the diet office as well as supervising the daily food service operations.


Diet office activities within the Diet Technician role include collaborating closely with Registered Dietitians to manage patients/patient list, assessing, counselling and visiting patients to clarify food allergies, likes or dislikes, oral intake, including supplements using therapeutic guidelines established by Standards of Care and charting relevant information in patient chart.

Supervision of the Food Service operations are done in compliance with predetermined policies and procedures and CUPE union agreements, and include the patient trayline, dishroom, Nutrition Centre and food service receiving areas. Other duties include replacement scheduling using an electronic scheduling system (Kronos), addressing and documenting employee performance concerns and providing technical and non-technical training, coaching, development, discipline and quality auditing of staff.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Abilities:
  • Diploma in Food & Nutrition Management from an approved college or degree in Applied Human Nutrition
  • CSNM membership or willing to become a member within a year
  • Previous experience in a diet office with experience in dietary software systems
  • Previous clinical experience (completing nutrition assessments and diet teaching) in an acute care setting
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of therapeutic diets
  • Demonstrated supervisory, leadership, decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook
  • Previous experience in food production/distribution and purchasing
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a self-directed manner as well as collaboratively within a team in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service when interacting with patients, families, colleagues and physicians
