Part-Time Employment Opportunity
By-Law Enforcement Officer
The Town of Shelburne is currently seeking a part-time By-law Enforcement Officer. This position requires a hands-on individual who works well independently and can manage multiple priorities and personalities concurrently. Customer relations and conflict management skills form key components of the position requiring the By-law Enforcement Officer to interpret bylaws, regulations, and applicable rules to the public. This position will enforce municipal regulations, investigate complaints, and issue warnings and citations to commercial and residential property owners and occupants.
The By-law Enforcement Officer is also responsible for the following:
- Administration and enforcement of the by-laws of the Town
- Conduct inspections and investigations into Town by-law infractions
- Seeking solutions in cooperation with others as needed to bring about successful conclusions to issues
- Ensure timely and appropriate responses, including follow-up to public inquiries
- Issue tickets and fines for by-law infractions
- Maintain notebook integrity for violations and take evidence in case of issues going to court
- Complete statistical reports as required by the Chief Administrative Officer
The individual will work with internal staff, Town Council, businesses, and town residents to ensure Town by-laws are adhered to.
Minimum Qualifications
A candidate must:
- Be 19 years of age or older
- Possess and maintain a valid NS driver’s license
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
- Clear a Police Record check, Criminal Record check, and/or Background check
- Comply with requirements to be sworn in as a special constable if not already appointed
- Be bondable
Opportunity will be given to those who are qualified in conducting investigations, issuing tickets and report writing.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
An ideal candidate will possess the following:
- Knowledge of Policies and Procedures as they apply to the position
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively - both orally and in writing
- Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with co-workers and the public in a courteous and tactful manner
- Demonstrated knowledge of conflict management techniques
- Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgement in decision-making processes
Hours of Work: This is a part-time contract position with varied hours.
Supervision:The By-law Enforcement Officer will report to the Chief Administrative Officer
