Grain Farmers of Ontario is looking for a Senior Economist who can wrangle, analyze, and process data, to model scenarios, and interpret the results. This work will be used to create the narrative and strategies to affect the government policy that ensures a sustainable businesses environment for grain farmers in Ontario. The ideal candidate seeks out and sees the data that will tell the story for Ontario grain farmers. They are experienced in analyzing the economic opportunities and costs of global and domestic policies and the economic forces impacting farm businesses. The Role

Reporting to the Manager of Government Relations, and a member of the government relations team, the Senior Economist will play an important role compiling the data and computing the facts to identify opportunities/issues facing Ontario grain farmers that will be used to develop the strategies and the narrative for the Government Relations activities of Grain Farmers of Ontario. Creating and executing a plan to identify and explore emerging economic issues impacting grain farmers and the Ontario grains industry, formulating economic and financial forecasts, as well as providing assessments and advice on approaches to domestic government policy and reactions to economic forces in the domestic and global agriculture environment.

Your day-to-day
  • Collection of data and financial modelling to create analysis of crop prices, annual increases to the cost of production including the Carbon pricing (direct and indirect)
  • Creating assessments using computational analysis for scenarios of issues facing farmers eg. crop damage, trade impacts, increased costs et al
  • Analysis and input into the annual premium setting process and benefits of Crop insurance and Ontario Risk Management program
  • Economic analysis of current and proposed federal and provincial policies to determine the economic impact and opportunities for grain farmers and the industry including Climate Change policies
  • Compiling the input into the federal and provincial budgeting process
  • Analysis of the USDA crop reports and US Farm Bill and creating useful commentary to share with GFO membership
  • Identify and analyze emerging economic trends utilizing data science tools to forecast the probabilities, potential impacts and opportunities for Ontario grain farmers. Including key trends in jurisdictions including Europe, United States, Russia, France and Australia
  • Collaborate with other agriculture economists in other commodity organizations in Ontario and across Canada to share best practices and intelligence
  • Lead the external consultants in the update of the Economic Assessment of the Ontario Grains Industry
What you will Bring
  • University degree in Business or Economics or a related discipline
  • 5 years relevant work experience required
  • Expertise in financial and economic modelling, “What If” analysis, experience with Computational methods including Monte Carlo analysis in Excel or another tool is required
  • Understanding of the grains industry, agriculture in Canada or a similar commodity and industry is required
  • Experience and skill in presenting analytical results and recommendations in a variety of formats and the ability to create presentations
  • Sound judgment, integrity in all actions, critical thinking skills required
  • Willingness to work extended hours and evening as required
