Department Information

The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority - Stanton Territorial Hospital (NTHSSA) is offering challenging nursing work and work life balance. Join our health care team as a Registered Nurse (RN). Stanton Territorial Hospital (STH) is a brand new facility which opened in 2019 and is located in Yellowknife Northwest Territories (NWT). STH is the referral center for approximately 43,000 NWT residents and 5,900 residents from the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. STH provides health care services to adults and children on an inpatient/outpatient and outreach basis in order to restore health with dignity. STH maintains a tobacco free environment within the building and throughout the property, recognizing the health hazards associated with tobacco in the workplace, both to smokers and non-smokers alike. Therefore, Stanton maintains a tobacco free environment within the building and throughout the property.

Job Information

The incumbent will work out of Inuvik Public Health and implement the IRC TB Elimination Action Plan and it is expected that the incumbent will work collaboratively to ensure all work is completed in a timely manner. The incumbent operates within NTHSSA By-laws, Policies and Procedures, Union of Northern Workers (UNW) Collective Agreement and Territorial Government Legislation. This position is a partnership between the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the IRC to eliminate TB in the ISR funded by the Federal Government to address the high incidence of TB in the Inuit population.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of health status of population, inequities in health, health determinants, primary care principles, health promotion strategies, disease and injury prevention, health protection, harm reduction, curative care, rehabilitation and supportive or palliative care
  • Knowledge in the treatment and procedures involved for Tuberculosis.
  • Knowledge in the field of tuberculosis or respiratory diseases or out-patient clinic setting, if working in TB Clinic.
  • Knowledge of the nursing process, principles, and practices of immunization.
  • Knowledge of behavioural change models, harm reduction theory and teaching/learning principles.
  • Knowledge of the Public Health Act, Communicable Disease Control Regulations and Health Information Protection Act (HIPA) and other applicable legislation
  • Knowledge of leadership strategies in order to lead, encourage, advise and cooperate with colleagues to promote and maintain positive relationships, to achieve patient/resident/client team and organizational goals within available resources.
  • Knowledge of the process of policy and procedure development and quality improvement initiatives

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

A Nursing Degree and/ or Diploma and five (5) years of experience in a Community Health Center or Public Health Clinic.

Three (3) years of previous work experience in a health care setting with communicable diseases, especially TB, is preferred. Training taken on IFA 101 is an asset.
